Why does Langley have such a bad reputation?

No jealousy here. I've been told (by parents of kids who attend Langley HS) that a lot of kids at the school have too much freedom and too much money and that leads to drugs. My kids don't attend Langley so I have no first hand experience with the school and to be honest, there is drug use in every HS.

Why would kids who go to Langley have more freedom than any other kids.

DP. Maybe more likely to have access to cars and money and less likely to need to have an after-school job.

Well, at least this thread is not about Yorktown.

What does SE DC schools have to do with Langley, VA?

PP's just a bitter troll.

Wrong. But keep on perpetuating that hackneyed stereotype. The parking lot has a few luxury vehicles, yes. The rest are normal cars driven by both students and teachers. Plenty of kids drive old Hondas and Toyotas (and parents, for that matter - I'm one of many). The "power structure" is just fine, thanks.

The constant haters are tiresome. Why don't you worry about your own schools instead of trying to tear down one your kids don't even attend.

You may have missed the part that my kids attend an elementary school that feeds into Langley. My children will eventually attend Langley HS.

Sure. We all *totally* believe you.

Of course there is. So why are you worried about Langley? Any HS will have some drug users.

Ah, yes! Social engineering at its finest.

Anonymous wrote:OP, I had the same fears when I was house-hunting, but I believe the reputation is unfounded. I think the "bad" reputation only exists on DCUM or with people who have no direct experience with Langley. My kids attended elementary, middle and high school in the Langley pyramid and we have been super-happy with it. We are dual feds (so, not wealthy), and have not had any major concerns with the "wealth difference" other than the fact that the wealthier kids are more likely to be "popular." I have no idea whether Langley are doing more drugs than at other schools (I know that kids vape and some probably use pot, but they don't hang with my kids.)

My kids have found great friends, are involved in activities, and are getting a stellar education. The pyramid does a good job setting kids up for success so that when my oldest started high school, the work load was challenging but completely manageable.

Exactly this. Our kids have all attended Langley pyramid schools and we've all loved Langley. Excellent education, tons of activities, nice kids. The people who start rumors about the school are always those whose kids don't even go there. Go figure.

I am a Langley parent and have not heard any bad stories. The new principal seems very communicative and if anything goes on, she informs us.

+1
I particularly like the newsletter emails she sends out every week with pictures and descriptions of all the recent big activities - plays, musical performances, sports, academic competitions, etc. She manages to include all the different activities so that everyone gets their moment. I really like that.

Ok, MHS parent! Psst: Langley kids aren't any "less happy" than other teens. Nice try, though.

Agree. We've lived in McLean a quarter decade and sent kids through Langley. It's a terrific nationally-recognized school. There have always been all sorts of kids that go through it - my kids weren't into drugs, but others were, etc. It's a fine institution and all colleges know how demanding it is and how many advanced AP course offerings there are.

So you think OP does not live in the Langley pyramid? From what I’ve seen on DCUM, it is usually Langley pyramid parents who start these threads, either complaining about LHS or fishing for information. Remember Bullis Mom, who pulled her daughter out of Langley after 9th grade and then bashed the school for at least 4-5 more years?

I think there’s something about the dynamics there that leads to this. When you pay for the “very bestest,” you’re more likely to get upset or have second thoughts when you learn that Langley has some of the same issues as other schools or perhaps even its own issues. Note that I am not suggesting it’s not a fine school, only that the parents there may be more inclined than those at other schools to dissect any imperfections there.

DP here. The only parent I can remember who actually had kids at Langley (albeit only for a very brief time) and who obsessively bashed the school was Bullis Mom. But then, she was her own particular brand of crazy and clearly had it out for the administration there. She had problems that were uniquely her own. All of the other "bashers" are parents whose kids attend other schools. IOW, they know nothing about Langley and choose to believe (and start) nasty rumors on anonymous websites. When people do that, it's pretty clear there's a bad case of resentment going on.

I was kind of nerdy and hung with quiet people in my niche, but there were a lot of drugs, underage sex (I'm talking freshmen/sophomores with 25 year old men), and a sh!t ton of drinking w/ parents who hosted. I got invited to some of it, didn't partake.

So you mean, parties just as *every other high school* has parties? Oh, ok. And as for the bolded, please. You expect us to believe this?

I went to a not-so-great school and we did the same thing. I don't think wealth and "freedom" have anything to do with it. Sign-o-the-times.

Exactly. I attended a crappy high school in the Midwest and experienced all of the above. Well, except the freshmen/sophomores with 25 yr. old men B.S.

+1 on a lot of drinking and parents not caring about it.

It’s a myth to get to our money through socioeconomic integration.
