OP - Check out the Johnson scholarship before you fall for this.

I know someone who got the Johnson scholarship. Because he got the scholarship, his parents gave him the $400,000 they put away for college. Like pp have said- rich kids and very greek.

Sounds like they planned well for college. Shame on them.

They did. No shame. The point is that the Johnson scholarship’s existence doesn’t somehow disprove the repeated responses that it’s a rich kid school.

Nor does your single data point refute it.

NP. Just 7% of students at Washington and Lee receive Pell Grants. 19.1% of students there come from the top 1% (so income of over $600K/year), while just 8% come from the bottom 60%, or less than 65K/year. This is the second lowest of *any* college or university in the entire US (for reference, there's about 4000 of them). That doesn't mean rich people are bad, or that families should be shamed for making a lot of money and saving for their children, or that students at the school are inherently bad people. It's merely a data point - a data point that Washington and Lee is overwhemingly a place of students with socioeconomic means, even more so than the typical elite school.

The Johnson isn’t for poor kids. It’s a merit award designed to attract high stat kids and keep up with the Amherts of the world.

Huge greek system, tons of drinking, tiny town. Very little diversity, very little.

Exactly. A PP suggested it was a reason to refute the rich kid assumption. My point is that it’s not.

Years ago, when it still was mostly male, it seemed to possibly be a sort of safety valve school for the mediocre sons of rich parents. Maybe things have changed. It is well ranked. But the last name “Lee” is not on trend...

My DD was accepted last year so we spent sometime on campus. Frankly her primary motive for applying was to compete for a Johnson scholarship. She was not selected although we were offered financial aid.

DD sat in on a class and we toured campus and spent the nite in town. My DW and I both liked it although I was a little concerned about my DD feeling like a have-not amongst the haves. My DD did not want to rush a sorority and did not like the location and feel of the junior dorms.

In the end my DD decided it wasn’t for her. My DW and I thought it would be a very nice place to spend your college years but we didn’t want to not respect my DD’s wishes.

Because of Lee, VMI literally next door, and the confederate flags it seemed to be a place that draws strong feelings. Spend some time on campus and you’ll get a sense if it is right for your family.

Thoughtful post, thank you. If you don’t mind, did she get to the Johnson weekend? Was the financial aid significant?

My DD was also accepted with a generous FA package. Felt the same as above. We parents lived it & it’s a beautiful campus but DD didn’t want to be “the poorest kid on campus” No thank you! I had to respect that as DD had other choices. Also the sorority women were scary.

PP - can you share what her other options were? My DS likes the small LAC feel of W&L, just not the southern pride part or the Greek life.
