Would you stop using ziplocs to help your kids have less plastic in the their oceans in the future?

NP here. I hear you, and I personally love that you are doing this. Another perspective on plastics, though. I wouldn't be able to function without them. I have a degenerative eye condition with low vision that's correctable to functional with a whole bunch of plastic: 2 week disposable contacts, plus high index lenses in my glasses, plus packaging for lenses and solutions that amount to a ridiculous pile from month to month. I hate it. But I cannot exist the way I do in society without this set up.

There it is, folks, the reason many reasonable people are skeptical of climate change hysteria. It is a too-convenient weapon in the global fight against capitalism. (btw, communist countries wrecked havoc on the environment, comrade).

There is a global war on capitalism? Seriously? I think you are mistaken.

At any rate, I am not anti-capitalism. I benefit from this market immensely.

But you [general] are delusional if you don't think it is protection of capitalistic interests that keeps high level change from happening. And that is why capitalism is a problem, in its current state.

People are protecting current interests instead of looking into the future and seeing how new technologies can be big business and 1. help mitigate climate change (which might be too late) and more importantly: 2. Mitigate the effects of climate change on people and habitats so we can survive.

A better choice would be to never fly again and always take the bus or train to work. Not using plastic cutlery isn’t going to make a huge difference and is just easy for you to donso you do it. But for environmentalists to stop flying? Now that would change things!

Of course not flying would change things more significantly. But...we do what we can. Some things cannot be avoided. Flying is one of them. I have to fly to be employed and to see my ill and aging parents.

I DON'T HAVE to use plastic forks or eat meat or use a gas mower or over consume.

We do what we can.

You can absolutely find a job that doesn’t require travel. Seeing elderly parents isn’t necessary. You could stop flying if you really wanted to, but you have excuses. That’s what I dislike about environmentalists. They don’t promote or support policy that actually makes a difference.

Seriously? Capitalism has done more to save lives than you can count! From medical treatments, medications, safe means of travel, safer forms of shelter, quality food that has been tested, etc. Scary you don’t realize this.

+googolplex!

It is frightening how dumb and naïve many are when it comes to capitalism's immense benefits to society.

Actually capitalism kills innovation.. for example... the light bulb... the best light bulb is cheap and lasts forever... but capitalism killed that technology because it wouldn't make money.

How about insulin... capitalism.

Back to Econ 101... most successful countries agree a hybrid of capitalism and other types of other Political/economic systems are the most successful.

There are more choices than capitalism and communism ... you know... or maybe you don't.

It's not excuses. It's living in this world as it is. your job sucks self-pity I'm not going to address whether or not you think I need to see my parents who are on their way out the door. You're ridiculous with that line of thought .

And not every environmental choice has to deal directly with the atmosphere. I can choose an electric mower to reduce noise and air pollution.

I can reduce consumption so my s*** doesn't end up in the water

I can choose a sunscreen that doesn't bleach the coral reefs.

it is people like you who seem to think that you have to be 100% perfect or why bother that I don't understand..

I maintain my original position: we do what we can and try to fight for policy and infrastructure change that can help protect us in this future we are barreling towards

If we'd all just eat a few CEOs each day, rather than going vegan or vegetarian, the planet would be saved in a snap.

The future, if we have one, will be seized by others somewhere out there, far from centers of Euro-American power. The US left has not a single clue what is happening or what needs be done. Some Europeans have a clue, but I doubt that even the Greeks or Spanish will fix the problem. That's a possibility. Watching southern Europe is warranted, but I think we should look toward Brazil or even South Africa for an enlightened popular movement that may seize corporate power. The so-called communist countries are totally totalitarian and totally useless to humankind. There is no such thing as a communist country on planet Earth. None. There is no such thing as a capitalist democracy on Earth, either.

“The environmental movement has to change it's message. We are not destroying the planet, we are destroying humans (and yes, many other creatures but we only care about humans). The earth will be fine after we're gone, we will be flicked off like a speck of dust.”

Environmentalists have not done a good job of messaging the people impacts vs the animal/planet/nature impacts. I would say too an excessive focus on individual actions rather than regulations in companies just directs effort in the wrong way - individual actions will make no real dent in anything.

Yes, but saving lives is bad for the environment. People are bad for the environment. The worst thing you can do for the environment is have a child. Flying is probably second.

Yes. It's short sighted capitalism that focuses on this quarter's profits and share price over long term growth and sustainability. That's not even the only way to do capitalism.
