He's a perfectionist and demands it. IMO would be a better fit for older kids because he kills the fun of soccer which is too bad when you are dealing with 8 and 9 year olds.

Thank you for some insight on the coach. That is very good to know. My DD has always had really laid back coaches and has thrived. I'm not sure how she would do with someone yelling - could go either way. I think she could take the yelling and still perform but if she stops having fun it would likely be the end of soccer after that year and push for something else at her age. She is not at the point of live and breath soccer. and would prefer joy over top team, especially when she has enjoyed her current ADP team and coaches despite less challenge.

Do you have a sense for roster sizes?

Ok - have re-read the prior post (thank you for the heads up) and have searched further for more info on the Mclean U9/U10 coach and we are now most likely going to bail out of the Mclean 2010 travel tryouts Monday. It may be a lot of the unknown since we were originally at least go and see for ourselves to get a feel at the tryouts, but think we may opt for one last pool practice with her pro coach in Arlington before the 2nd tryout day for 2010 Arlington. Would any MYS parent say different for 2010 girls Mclean travel tryouts and say go to U10 tryout anyway?

Maybe go to the first tryout and see if Coach Jaon makes sense for your daughter. He's a polarizing figure. Some parents love him and think he provides the tough love their daughters need. Others find him too abrasive. I would suggest attending the tryout and judging for yourself.

Thanks to all for the feedback. We did end up going to keep options open and at minimum just see how other clubs operate, at least from tryout perspective. We can say the tryouts were very different than Arlington by volume - ~40 girls compared to ~100, understanding Arlington has 6 teams compared to Mclean's 3 teams. Not sure there is much we can tell on the coaches front considering it is tryouts format and they are in assessment mode. Because we have no familiarity with the girls/club, I don't really know how well my DD did based on movement as full groups rotating whereas you can tell a little bit more with the Arlington tryouts we had done. Was with another nonMYS travel parent today so will have to try to see if we can talk to some of the other parents there next time.

Research the coaches carefully. Ask parents what they think. Take your kids to the tryouts and see how the coaches interact with them. Nothing is more important than a good coach who cares for your kid.

McLean's tryouts are rigged in advance. Prove me wrong.

Rigged in what sense? People going with whom they know?

Find a universally beloved coach who all parents and players respect. Any coach that is divisive and abusive and a yeller has problems, whether you think that is good and tough for your kid or not. The top coaches are respected by fellow coaches as well, not viewed with disdain for secretly undermining fellow travel staff with TDs and DOCs. Don't be naive. Ask everyone you know for examples of past behavior. Good luck.

Coaches decide in advance who they want for the top teams. The rest of the kids in the tryout are there just for show.

Is this why ecnl rosters turn over significantly year to year between u13 and u16?

They have to fill holes after players leave for greener pastures. It is all pre-decided from what I've seen, and there are fields with no one watching.

On the PPs talking about Jahon, he has the worst reputation among coaches in the entire DMV. Bragging about how "tough" your coach was on your daughter only proves the reputation true. That's why no other club will hire him but MYS. Who wants a coach that loses his temper? We all have witnessed his antics from the sidelines. DD does not play there and never would.
