husband into "alternative" names for our boy

My SIL was insistent on using Irish names that 99.9% of Americans have no idea how to pronounce (Aiobhhan I think was her top choice). I have my thoughts on why people do this, but that's beside the point. What if you let DH pick whatever he wants for the middle name and you both could compromise on something a little more normal for the first name?

Is Aiobhhan supposed to be Siobhan? If so, I only know how to pronounce it bc I knew a person by that name. If not, how do you pronounce it?

I do think a few are pretty common - Kyle, Dylan (which oddly I see spelled Dillon a lot), Leonardo, and Wyatt.

My favorites from your list, as if you care, are Adrian, Caleb, Callum, Cosimo, Ellis, Elliott, Jesse, Sasha, and Xander.

Though not in the Russian/former Soviet countries, Sasha in the US sounds like a pretty feminine name

I had a friend that is asian and named her baby francesco, would be adorable if they called him frankie but to this day at 2 he is still francesco and def gets odd looks.
Good luck!

I don't think it's bizarre. There are many Asians with Anglo names. Michelle Rhee has a French name. Is that bizarre? And Filipinos have Spanish names even though they are Asian.

I was really surprised about how strong DH's feelings were about names as well. He vetoed ones that I had my heart on! Funny thing now is that he really likes the one I first wanted for DC1 (which is now her middle name) and wishes we had gone with it! So I say perservere with him & get some others to back you up (my DH's family also expressed how much they liked DC1's now middle name & that seemed to change DH's mind).

How about Lachlan (pronounced LOKlan)? Top 5 in Australia for a while now, but haven't heard it here.

I know a 14-yr old girl named Lachlan.

Well, that's silly. Lachlan is a boy's name. DH is Australian and we always joke that if we lived there, our son would be Lachlan Angus.

Okay, here is the rest of my short list, , selected both to be "non traditional" and go with the last name (which is why they are all at least 2 syllables). I hope someone discovers their baby's name on this list, for it will at least have come in handy...

Ariel; Asher, Adrian, Akiva; Atticus; Alexi; Caleb, Callum; Corwin, Cosmo or Cosimo; Crispin; Darby; Dmitri; Dylan; Dixon; Ellis; Ellison; Emile; Emory (or Amory); Elliott, Gael; Griffin; Jesse; Jordan; Kyle, Leonardo; Nico; Prosper; Rico, Rio, Sasha, Warner; Wyatt; Xander/Zander.

I always thought that this is was a short version for Nicolo (which I love, BTW)

Give me a name and I'll give you something negative it rhymes with, some negative nick name, or some negative association.

Jordan . . . is it a name or a country? Why are you being all middle eastern? Why are you naming your child after a country?? Do you really want to call your child Jordie??

Are you really into Air Jordan shoes? Teenagers refer to them as their "jordans." Do you want your kid to have the same name as a pair of sneakers?

Oooh this is fun, especially if I can be as silly as "Zander = Dander."

Donna is too close to Iguana

Kira will be made fun of when kids say "mirror mirror on the wall"

Elizabeth could be called beth, which is soooooo close to Meth! Who wants their kid being associated with a drug???

Cassandra has the word ASS in it, don't even get me started on what kids can do with that . . .

Sierra . . . what, is she as big as a mountain? Let's hope she doesn't have a weight problem.

YAh, Cecile it is then. BTW, I did not get what you wrote about "Kira".
