I wish you could name the club, perhaps after you leave! But I wouldn't put up with this crap...especially at U11. The fact that the club and coach will sacrifice development of your player just to win a few games says it all. I'd ask for my money back since you are obviously not a part of the team for this tournament. What a way to destroy a player's confidence.
I would actually sit down with your son, because locking in at a goalie position at U11 isn't the best idea. That can be his primary position but understanding and playing on the field can only help. |

Absolutely do NOT go to the tournament. You should ask for your players card so he can then try and guest for another team that weekend in another tournament.
And the people saying he should go and be a field player- there are 2 guest field players being brought in so 2 other kids aren't playing either. No way they are playing the goalie on the field. I am curious what country in Europe these kids are from. |
What a crappy club. Benching 11 year olds for foreign players? Geez. |
Decent clubs don’t do that until something like u16. Find another club for your kid, OP. And don’t tell them until the last minute either. |
Agree that goalkeeper is very important. It's kind of like defending... It's important but no one wants to do it because it's not as exciting as scoring goals. |
Wait until the first game of the season, then inform the coach 15 minutes prior to kickoff that your kid can't make it as he's accepted a guest player spot on another team. I'm sure the coach will understand. |
C'mon now! This is America! No one gets tagged as a "special player" without scoring goals. |
If it is an out of town tournament, and you'd have travel costs - I'd definitely skip it. |
Yep as a mom of a defender most people on the sidelines never cheer for DC but the coaches really see the value (obviously). |
| The only way I would attend is if there were two caveats. One, that there is no "backup" goalkeeper. If there are no other kids who have played goalkeeper for actual games and there is the chance that the visiting player could get sick, injured or tossed out of the game, and the team would be left without a competent goalkeeper. And two, ask the coach to offer some guaranteed time, say a at least one half or at least two halves over the weekend, where your son could play goalkeeper. If there is no guarantee of playing time, then say that it isn't worth the time and expense for you to travel to the tournament. |
There being no back up goalie isn't OP's problem. If OP's kid gets hurt what would the team do? And I wouldn't trust the coach to guard time playing time. If the coach is willing to bring in 3 guest players, the coach won't care about keeping his promise of playing time. |
| Did you call Trump? If he doesn't approve the foreign player is out! |
Np but I can see this getting turned around on op is they had a mishap and needed a backup goalie but he wasn’t there. Obviously op is not to blame but it doesn’t mean they wouldn’t see it that way |
So what. If the guest kid gets hurt the coach can call the Karma Police and complain about it. |
Not only should you not bring your son to this tournament to be a "backup" to a guest player, but you should RUN from a club that would do this at U11. |
