What oscar nominated films are actually worth watching?

It amazes me that these movies were nominated for Best Picture. 30 years ago they wouldn't have been; the bar was so much higher in the past. These movies were enjoyable but hardly outstanding artistic achievements of the highest caliber. I doubt "A Star is Born" or "Green Book" will be taught about in film classes.

I completely agree. I think movie quality has been slowly declining the past decade, but really went off the cliff in the past year or so.

That being said, I watched Lion (nominated a few years ago) on a plane yesterday and it was phenomenal.

The Favourite
Blackkklansman
Black Panther
Incredibles 2
Isle of Dogs
Spiderman: Into the Multiverse

Green Book and Star Is Born are probably useful if you want to talk about the politics of storytelling. Or recycling.

I have been trying to watch it for a week. I think I have made it through the first 20 mins. I give up.

I get it. But Roma movie really drew me in and has been in my mind ever since. Just the opening scene alone got to me - I really love the way the director's shots and perspective.
Roma is one of the best IMO and will probably win a lot of the top prizes. Although I'm really pulling for Spike Lee to win Best Director, I know in my heart what's going to happen.

I see every movie that comes out in the theaters.

Agree with some of the posters:

1. Green Book
2. Star is Born
3. Cold War
4. Bohemian Rhapsody
5. First Solo
6. (Watch Roma on Netflix)
7. Black Panther
8. Black Klansman

* The Favourite was a bore and a snore.

I disagree, in that we are seeing a difference in the last 30 years. Almost 20 years ago Titanic won for best picture, it was never that good a movie, but was so well loved and commercially successful that the academy chose it above better films that year. Black Panther is the same, might not be the most cinematic of achievements, but the domestic numbers don't lie. According to American audiences it is the "Best" picture of the year. The academy never awarded a statue to Orson Welles or Alfred Hitchcock, Spike Lee earned his first nomination THIS YEAR! The academy is about politics and favorites, not about truly the best film, and it has been that way forever!

For those who saw Free Solo, is it appropriate for a fourth grader? I see it's PG-13 but I assume that's for language. And he's heard it all from older sibs so it wouldn't faze him unless it was constant throughout the movie.

I don’t remember anything particularly offensive about it. There may have been bad language.

Star is Born

Bohemian Rapsody

Black Panther

Green Book

IA. All of these were fantastic.

Green Book appears to have been made against the wishes of the family of the doctor which makes me feel kind of icky about it

Neither is Bohemian Rhapsody. It's a formulaic biopic. The music is fun and I enjoyed the LiveAid recreation on the big screen -- but best picture worthy it is not.

14:18 here. I agree that BR is not really best picture worthy, however OP asked which of the movies are worth watching. I really enjoyed the music, especially the LiveAid performance - especially because I'm old enough to clearly remember it. But again -I do agree on it not being oscar-worthy.

Everyone in our family loved Bohemian Rhapsody.

It wasn't the most important subject matter but it was very well acted and took full advantage of the movie screen as an art form and was great entertainment - I think some of the movie's power will be lost watching it at home.

+1 about Bohemian Rhapsody. Bonus if you grew up on Queen songs, it really showcased the music.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a Bryan Singer vehicle and he is absolutely vile. Weinstein level. Worse because he involved minors, https://www.indiewire.com/2017/12/bryan-singer-sexual-assault-rape-allegations-timeline-1201903868/. I haven't seen the movie but I hope it doesn't win anything because of that.

I don't think the Oscars have been good since LA Confidential and Titanic were nominated... (LA was robbed!)

I watched the whole thing. I seriously don't know why it's nominated for anything. It was very pedestrian. Kind of quirky, black and white, filmed in Mexico...but, not a strong film IMHO.

There is a great scene somewhere in the middle of full frontal male nudity that I did enjoy very much.

Fair and important points though he was taken off the project long before the end:

Glad I didn't know this before I saw it though as I likely would have skipped it and missed a great movie.

It's a GREAT movie, but frankly maybe too slow for a fourth grader?
