It amazes me that these movies were nominated for Best Picture. 30 years ago they wouldn't have been; the bar was so much higher in the past. These movies were enjoyable but hardly outstanding artistic achievements of the highest caliber. I doubt "A Star is Born" or "Green Book" will be taught about in film classes.
I disagree, in that we are seeing a difference in the last 30 years. Almost 20 years ago Titanic won for best picture, it was never that good a movie, but was so well loved and commercially successful that the academy chose it above better films that year. Black Panther is the same, might not be the most cinematic of achievements, but the domestic numbers don't lie. According to American audiences it is the "Best" picture of the year. The academy never awarded a statue to Orson Welles or Alfred Hitchcock, Spike Lee earned his first nomination THIS YEAR! The academy is about politics and favorites, not about truly the best film, and it has been that way forever!
