I'm a NYer, so Six on Blossom and Gilmore Girls were very comfortable for me. I feel like everyone else is speaking as slowly as they do in the South.

Came here to say this too. Also a NYer, who is frequently told to slow down my own speaking by older people.

I first noticed this with Happy Endings many years ago.

Also NY’er and same. I LOVE VEEP for the dialogue. Succession and Derry Girls too. Nothing better than quick wit!

It's frustrating watching West Wing because Alan Sorkin is the greatest TV writer ever. I want to hear everything he wrote, but it's too fast to comprehend and too fast to read the closed captioning with so much more text coming in. It's also unnatural and a distraction after a lifetime of hearing real people talk. The gimmick doesn't work. Would it really ruin the show to have people talk normally? "Longmire" talked slowly and still appeared intelligent.

Why do they talk like that

The style of dialogue is based on screwball comedies of the 1930s & 40s. I’m a huge fan of the Thin Man movies, and the speech patterns are very similar.

Came here to say this--watch "His Girl Friday." (Thanks, Film History 101.)

That said, I have to be in a certain mood to watch this type of dialogue. I like both GG & MMM, but had to turn off MMM last week because the pace was so irritating to me. It's hard to have on in the background--you really have to focus or you miss stuff.

I love the pace of these shows! NYer and big fan of screwball comedies. Watching shows with this pace of dialogue is my go-to comfort TV.

I worked in Fort Worth for a few years and spent months altering the cadence and pace of my speech after frustrated comments from coworkers. I found it maddening to pay attention to their pace of speech, but it helped to realize that it was as exhausting for them to listen to me as it was for me to listen to them.

Same for this New Englander.
