Really? Plenty? I have four kids who play hockey and we are at the rink all the time for open skates and I have never seen this.

Yes, really. Plenty. Lots of people don't know how to skate.

No you haven't. Have been to all the local ice rinks public sessions and even school age kids are rarely wearing helmets for just basic skating. My child has taken group lessons from beginner on up and after the very first level and very young ages, helmets are not used.

NP. That can’t be right, unless you live in flyover country. I have been to an ice rink exactly once, two days ago, and around half the kids were wearing helmets. I can’t imagine it was just that day or ice rink (Cabin John).

Teens? I doubt it.

Today’s teens are so used to helmets as just part of life. When DS was teaching his gf to skate he made sure she wore a helmet, as he does most of the time. I would say that the majority of his friends don’t for free skate, but some (like my son) use their hockey helmets and no one gives shit about it. They wear them for everything so it’s not a big deal anymore.

I never said it was teens. Kids ages 6-12. The PP said even young beginners do not wear helmets and that is just not believable.

Dd is a figure skater. Check out
icehalo.com
It looks like a larger headband with many colors etc. she still wears it when trying out new jumps.

I insisted my kids wear helmets when they were ice skating. They took figure skating lessons for years, but stopped when they were in their tween/early teen years, I think in large part due to the self-consciousness they felt being the only ones wearing a helmet.

One time my DC had a bad fall. I was extremely grateful DC was wearing a helmet at the time.

Ice skating is extremely dangerous and it boggles my mind that it seems to be the only sport that doesn't prioritize safety.

As I was finding links, I stumbled onto this one about the dangers of spinning. It never occurred to me spinning had inherent dangers.
Clearly, a helmet wouldn't protect against this.

Where are these public rinks requiring everyone to wear helmets? My oldest wore one for a beginning skating lesson when he was in preschool. He hasn’t since. My other child never wore one. I haven’t seen teens or adults wearing them for public skate unless they are hockey helmets in any of the public rinks.

It is required at our local rink outside of Boston for lessons.

Ok, but not for open skating teens and adults? Or kids? I can’t imagine everyone wearing helmets during open skate.

No, never.

At cabin john I would say that 1/2 to 2/3 of the <12 year olds wear helmets during free/open skate. I also see many teens wearing hockey helmets.

For those people who thinks that it is not necessary to wear a helmet well let them learn a tough lesson when they fall and suffer a bad head trauma. It’s only a matter of time when the odds catch up to you , the more times you ice skate without a helmet the greater are the odds you will eventually suffer some sort of head injury. Live and learn!

I learned how to skate at the age of 5, spent my life growing up in and around rinks, took some hard falls over the years, and never once used a helmet. I think the use of a helmet to skate is a bit of overkill personally, and seems to have become a trend over the past 10 or so year , along with the whole helicopter parenting thing; most people when they are learning to skate just end up on their rear ends or on their knees if they do fall.

I never once wore a helmet skiing growing up. Doesn't mean my teenagers don't wear them now.

I haven't been to a skating rink in decades but this came to mind. I never ever wore skiing helmets until I was in my 20s and returned to it after living in the south. And everyone was. It's at least 99% of skiiers and riders wearing them now and it's amazing to me when people don't.

Maybe it will shift that way with skating, maybe not. But I'm def putting bike helmets in my early elem kids when they learn

Sonny Bono and Kennedy changed the # of ski helmets on the slopes.

Just b/c you do not have the same "celebrity" injuries publicized in skating - does not mean they are not there.

I know of 3 skating injuries this year across my friend group -all at public skate - all b/c of others who either fell or cut in front of them. 2 injuries were broken wrists and one lost a tooth. No - these examples were not helmet related but the fact is that putting it on your head is no big deal.

My 12, 10 and 8 YO wear them .

Your argument makes no sense.
