Do you like mumbo sauce? Are you from here?

DC Native (Well DC Metro- Mclean,Balllston, Georgetown, Old Town) and I only say I like it so I look like I'm an actual urban elite liberal.

Not from here, been here 12 years, saw this very recently in the grocery store and had no idea what it was.

I'm from DC and thought it was mambo sauce. It's basically Pete's with corn syrup right? I think a Shi Shi version would be nice, like gourmet ketchup. However, I wouldn't touch the original just like you'll never find me in a curry out. I do think that 2 interesting top chef challenges could come from this - one, to work the original mambo sauce into a gourmet meal (escalate it), two, to produce escalated versions of different cities secret pleasures like chicken and mambo sauce DC , cheeses Philly etc. They would have to draw knives of course. last, bowser continues to reveal herself to be a dud.

From here, never heard of it. Until Bowser.

And the Sen. Kerry Tweet was over the top.

I was up late last night loling, trying not to wake up the kids.

I’ll hsve to check out the Kerry tweet.

The Kerry tweet is great.

“The first lesson my wife Teresa taught me: you always want to be pro-condiment.
But let's cut @MurielBowser some slack. Any day of the year we'd be grateful if the most controversial thing that other politician in DC said on social media was just about mumbo sauce...”

I’m from here and have known about mumbo sauce since high school, so 30 years. Have only had it a couple of times.

Born and raised in DC and still reside here. Love mumbo sauce and when friends from college come and visit, they all want crabs and chicken wings with mumbo sauce.

I'm 37 btw.

Not from DC, not even from the US. Love it!

I've lived here for 25 years and have heard of it. Just googled how to make it - have to say, it sounds revolting.

I must say I agree with Kerry - if the Mumbo Sauce is the current scandal we should be relieved.

Anonymous wrote:The 35 year old "native" must have been soooooo sheltered (aka rich, never stepped foot in a carry-out). Mumbo sauce on wings and fries is DC standard carry-out fare. I am from DC and my first time in an away from home wing joint (Chicago) I felt so embarrassed asking for mumbo sauce and realizing they had no clue what I was requesting.
That being said, mumbo sauce is great from the right spot (U st olden days Yums in NW or Hong Kong carry out SE MLK and then Eddie Leonard's was good too). It is/was poorer young ppls pleasure. No need to go seek it out. Great for the lifestyle of low wage workdays followed by all night GoGo parties...a different age. My DC native teenager has never tried it because income allowed her to eat Pho instead of wings when she needs a warm tummy.

Or just ate at different carryouts. I'm from Philadelphia and I never ate a cheesesteak when I was growing up. Did not eat one until I was an adult, didn't see what the big deal was. We ate plenty of takeout. But it was mostly Chinese food, leavened by a bit of Thai or Indian. My mom didn't like beef so we never got it.

I've lived in DC for 10 years. Never heard of mumbo sauce until the Bowser thing. Can point you to all the best Indian and Burmese joints though ...

DC native; mother is a cave dweller. Grew up in the city before the 1968 riots. Mumbo sauce was not a DC thing. Beginning in the mid-70's there were a few Korean/Chinese carryouts (somebody mentioned the Hong Kong on MLK) had a sweet red sauce for fried rice. As far as I can suss out, "mumbo" sauce appeared as a thing in go-go clubs.

There was a sauce for fish sandwiches and chicken in Chicago, but it wasn't called mumbo.

I get tired of these DC-transplants making up "facts" about DC culture.
