Do you like mumbo sauce? Are you from here?

Grew up here, never even heard of it until about 5-6 years ago.

I am from DC and my first time in an away from home wing joint (Chicago) I felt so embarrassed asking for mumbo sauce and realizing they had no clue what I was requesting.
That being said, mumbo sauce is great from the right spot (U st olden days Yums in NW or Hong Kong carry out SE MLK and then Eddie Leonard's was good too). It is/was poorer young ppls pleasure. No need to go seek it out. Great for the lifestyle of low wage workdays followed by all night GoGo parties...a different age. My DC native teenager has never tried it because income allowed her to eat Pho instead of wings when she needs a warm tummy.

So your DC native teenager is sheltered too?

Grew up here, didn't learn about it until my mid-twenties. I have never tried it.

Mumbo/mambo sauce reminds me of the M. Barry era in DC. Unappetizing all around.

Also a native, in my 30s that never heard of it til a few years ago. But I'm white, though I grew up EOTP. Didn't get much carryout, maybe that's a factor?

Did you go to private high school like the Mayor? Not from DC, but some natives here describe it as so ubiquitous that it is “mathematically impossible” for Bowser to say she never heard of it going up.

Actually, I did. The same private high school, in fact. But it was Seton. Not super fancy and plenty of the student patronized carry outs, though i guess in close-in PG, not necessarily DC proper.

Yes. Very. My teen does not understand the concept of making $10 cover all meals or expenses through a weekend. Some old friends still need to find ways to make short cash stretch ...so know a single piece from Popeyes comes with a biscuit and that 7-11 pizza is tolerable. That is the mambo sauce lifestyle. Ahhh, I miss Firehouse wings from the old 8th st SE Eastern Market.

So Mambo sauce masks the taste of cheap carry out?

Mumbo sauce is best eaten on fried wings from a carry-out, in the car, after a late night of partying.

I have heard of it but no idea what it is. In my mind it’s like yumyum sauce. I need to find some and give it a whirl.

Every time I hit a bad pothole (before winter has even started) or think about how secretive Bowser is (chancellor selection committee sidelined), I ask how it is that this pretty incompetent, politically inastute person could have been re-elected without much opposition.

I'm a DC native in my 40's. The Koreans used to make mambo sauce at the carry-out I used to go during my teen years. Now that was good. I'm afraid that the stuff that is out today is not the real Mumbo sauce, but the imitation and it is definitely nasty. I will not touch the stuff today.

Not from here but moved here in 1999 and was introduced to mumbo sauce soon after. I lived in MoCo at the time and while I am AA my social group at the time was darn WASPy so people who don’t know didn’t want to know.
