Out of 700 APS 7th graders that take Algebra in 7th, only 70 take Calculus in 11th...was something I was told. The accelerated math plan is shit. |
No they won't. They said they are no longer covering 6th in 5th. |
You were "told"? That's a ridiculous stat and cannot be true. |
So they aren't going to present ES kids with any concepts above grade level, even if they are thoroughly bored on grade level? I certainly hope that's not true! I'm glad my kids are past that and got challenging math in ES. |
| Can't be true. If it were, they'd stop offering Math 678. |
I think that is highly unlikely. My son isn't all that special and he took calc in 7th. I wouldn't be surprised if it is 70 at W&L. But even so, what is the advanced track for if it isn't for the advanced kids? |
| ^^ calc in 11th. |
| I'd be interested in a stat on how many in advanced math in middle have to retake algebra in 9th grade. I was told if they cannot demonstrate proficiency then they repeat algebra in 9th |
They said they would do "some extensions" for gifted learners, and that "may" involve some 6th grade concepts. But no systemic instruction of 6th grade concepts to 5th graders. Which is as you would expect from the new pathway where 6th graders either take Math 6 or Math 678. I had a kid do the old accelerated route and it's been fine. Don't like the sound of the new one. |
huh? what can't be true? |
Above is what we were told for my 5th grader as well. From what I've seen, there is no extension to 6th grade concepts/work. It is a bit of a joke. |

Same here sadly. 5th grader (who adores math and who is really good at it) is bored silly. They didn't group for differentiated math this year and the whole class is clearly getting the same work. We'll see what the recommendation is for next year. I have concerns about cramming three years of math into one, but can't stand the thought of this kid being bored stiff in math another year in 6th. |
It seems reasonable to me. Not many kids get to take a post calculus class in high school. Usually only 1 or 2 multivariable class sections are offered at good high schools. |
|
| So what do parents of current 678 kids think of the class? How’s it going? Are kids happy and challenged? Or is the curriculum a poorly strung together set of concepts that they have to jam through in record speed to cover all of the relevant SOLs? |
