| I raised about A HUNDERED IN MY LIFE. Started when I was 5, now 73. BUT ALL GOOD THING COME TO A END. ACCIDENT had to stop, They teach you and you learn from them. the ones I had where Regiistered Akc and ARHA.. I WOULD BUY PUP FROM Reliable BREEDERS. Tried to stay with 3 to 4 blood lines, then I could match them up myself to what I wanted, Brains, Looks, Stamina,Drive. That way you can get what you want, NOT PERFECT BUT CLOSE. YOU can see what your going to get by what you but together. your dog |
| Get a coonhound. They are a little bigger, but so much wonderful dog. So much. I love beagles, too, but they "bay" and it sounds like they are being murdered. I've come to love all hounds. |
| You can get any coonhound from a million rescues in the South. All over. And so many are eutanized. Please do not shop for a dog. |
| Since this old thread was bumped seemingly without a question, let me put in a plug for the Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland. If you're interested in a beagle or beagle mix, they are a great organization to work with. I'm not affiliated with them in any way except that we worked with them a long time ago to get a beloved dog who has since passed. Beagles have a lot of great qualities. They love unconditionally, though they have minds of their own! |
| Funny to see this thread again as I was one of the original commenters. Our beagle is still as much of a love bug as ever! She is calming down considerably as she gets older. They we just all love. |
+1 BRSM is a great organization. |

I've had rescue beagles. We had three beagles and a hound mix at one time. They all had very different personalities (dog-alities?). One was happy-go-lucky. Another one would shake when I even looked at her with anything resembling a stern face.
They could be stubborn, loved those treats, but so sweet and cuddly and wonderful. One of them (the shaking one) insisted on being petted so much that I wanted to invent a petting hand machine. She would put her head under our hands when we would stop. The others appreciated being petted but then they would run along. They all slept in the king-sized bed with us. One would get completely under the covers. I don't know how she breathed under there, but it's what she insisted on doing. My current rescue dog isn't very cuddly and doesn't like to get on the bed. I miss that. I loved the baying - so cute. One time we were out walking and a fire truck drove by with its sirens. One of my beagles started baying along, which was so funny. We also rescued two cats and one of the cats thought she was a dog. She would follow us on walks. The other one was a scaredy cat and would run from the beagles, who delighted in chasing him. He practically lived under the bed for the first year. But after that, they became friends and cuddled together. What else? The hounds didn't really play fetch. I would throw something and they'd just look at me.
And if they get out and get on the scent of something, they'll come home when they're damn good and ready. One time two of the beagles dug under the fence and got out. We were out shopping at Potomac Mills (we had a dog door so they could go in and out). When we got home, we were told that they had been all over the neighborhood having an adventure, but they were sitting on the porch waiting for us. Thank god nothing bad happened to them. The best dogs ever. So many need to be rescued and loved. I love hounds, but I love all creatures. |
This. I would go insane. |
I have a hound (not beagle, coonhound) and another dog of a similar size (herding dog, long hair). The hound smells more “dog like” all else equal because she has an oilier coat. |
Your neighbors don’t think the baying is cute. |
| I had the sweetest beagle. He was a rescue. Never any problems with howling or smelling bad. Just a sweet, eager to please guy. I loved him! |
| None of our beagles have ever howled. |
