For those whose family has had h1n1 -- how did symptoms start?

Did anyone have a confirmed case of H1N1 and not have congestion/cough? I am wondering if my 12 month old DS had this last month. He went to bed absolutely fine, woke up around 2am crying with a 104 fever. Was miserable for 3 days, on and off high fevers, extremely lethargic- I was giving Tylenol/motrin throughout. But didn't have a runny nose or a cough. I didn't take him to the ped those first 3 days (I was in contact with the office throughout). I took him in on the 4th day, and the fever was down, but he did have an ear infection, which ended up clearing up without antibiotics. Wondering if anyone had a similar experience, and did have h1n1.

My son and I have had the flu for the past 48 hours but don't know if it is H1N1. Since there is confirmed H1N1 at his school, I'm guessing that's what we have. I've had fever (up to 102), aches, wooziness, very lightly runny nose and cough. Son has had very runny nose, slightly higher fever, persistent cough. Fever easily knocked back with ibuprofen. Whatever we have, it's not that bad.

pp 10.25 rash looked like hives , (i've seen hives before in other kids)

to other pp - yes you can get flu without congestion . . .suden high fevers generally tell tale sign - although there appartently is a virus circulating that is high fevers. test helps, but only 60% accurate for testing positive

Update - Yesterday - no fever for either of us, cough set in. Today - little or no fever but bad cough, headache, runny nose, very tired. Decided not to send son to school because, even if he does not have a fever, he is obviously still sick.

Hey i was wondering if you guys think my little man has the H1N1 flu, i am taking him and my daughter to the doctors today to make sure it is not. I just want some opinions,

My son started with a cold a few days ago, yesterday he started having diarea, really bad, he soaked through his clothes and crib. Today he still has a really bad cold, runny nose, cough. And he seems really fussy today, and he feels really warm(i cant find my temp, its around here somewhere, i am going to be buying another one asap) but i think he has abit of a fever. My little girl also has a very runny nose and cough now. My son is only 21 months old and my daughter is only 6 months and one week.
What do you all think, advice and opinions would be
GREAT, Thanks

This may be their assumption, but it is not the case. H1N1 is not the only strain circulating, as one PP incorrectly stated. I've had three colleagues diagnosed with the regular influenza strain (after being swabbed) and many others suffering with upper respiratory infections with no fevers.

I'm not sure what to do with this information. I'm sincere, not being snarky. Where does it leave you if you don't know what your kid has, or does it even matter at this point?

One of my DS's vomited once and then was home sick with fatigue and upset stomach for an entire week.

DD clearly has "a" flu of some variety - fever, sore throat, headache, body ache - and has been sick for 5 days so far.

The pediatrician didn't want to see either one of them - they said they would see them if I felt we needed to come in, but if they were doing ok at home it would be better to keep them at home since the peds are dealing with so many kids who are really sick right now, they are getting overwhelmed (and the waiting room is a total germ-fest). But with DD, they said based on her symptoms, I should assume it's swine flu b/c it's so rampant right now.

So we haven't had either of the kids tested and have no confirmation of whether this is/was swine flu. I've also been hearing that the test itself is very unreliable so if you test negative, you can't be sure that's an accurate result.

I talked to another ped yesterday who told me to go ahead and get them vaccinated for swine flu just in case that wasn't what they had. I have one kid who has remained healthy so he needs to be vaccinated so I guess I'll take all of them.

By the way, they are assuming any positive flu swab is h1n1. They won't do further testing.

And how on earth would they know it was seasonal rather than H1N1? They're only supposed to be doing the full typing for those critical.

Also, a negative rapid test does not mean no flu. The CDC has also stated not all are febrile.

Just because people think they have H1N1 doesn't necessarily mean they are freaking out about it. Chill.

I'm completely chilled. I happen to think most people are hypochondriacs.

You are probably one of those people who don't believe global warming is real either. If someone has a high temp, cough, sore throat, aches, fatigue, etc. that makes them a hypochondriac? Our ped told us that our son likely had H1N1 after they ruled out strep. And he'd had a seasonal flu shot. And a good number of kids in his class are also out with it. There is no particular benefit in believing it is swine since the treament is no different. Sick kids are sick kids. Your pronouncements that they don't have H1N1 doesn't make whatever flu they have go away any faster.

I had almost the exact experience in August. The Ped didn't test for H1N1 and said it could be almost anything. I went ahead and got DD the swine flu vaccine the other weekend (she is 11 mo now). Not sure if she had it in August, but just in case she didn't....
