My daughter is currently on day 3 of h1n1. First day, fever of 99, profuse nasal discharge, cough. A lot of fatigue...slept 15 hours. (she's 3). Second day, fever up to 102.5. That's when we had her tested.
By the way, they are assuming any positive flu swab is h1n1. They won't do further testing. |
|
This may be their assumption, but it is not the case. H1N1 is not the only strain circulating, as one PP incorrectly stated. I've had three colleagues diagnosed with the regular influenza strain (after being swabbed) and many others suffering with upper respiratory infections with no fevers. |

I thought my ds was having a reaction to the H1N1 shot the day after (slight fever and tired but came about gradually) but by the end of the day the fever was at 104.6 and probably would have stayed that way had I not started giving him tyleonol. For twenty four hours he stayed in bed only geting up once to go to the bathroom. I fed him some applesauce and water every hour becaus I suspected that he was too out of it to reach or ask for anything (and he's 8!).
The next day his fever ws 99 and he was upset tht he couldn't go to air and scare. Now it's 98 and he's climbing the walls. I woul say it hits fast and hard for older kids and then leaves just as quickly (fingers crossed). |
Give us an update in another day or two. I'd like to hear if it came back for another round. (Sounds a lot like my 6 year old, but he had round 2 which was not as bad.) |
And, so what? |
So people freaking out and assuming everything is swine flu - when it isn't - does not serve any purpose other than your need to be the center of attention. |
Just because people think they have H1N1 doesn't necessarily mean they are freaking out about it. Chill. |

from another discussion forum, one family's experience with H1N1 flu:
Tues. Oct. 13- In the afternoon Daughter (8yo) says she has a headache, gave her Tylenol, she did not have a fever. 4 hours later she had a fever of 103 and began vomiting. Wed.- Tried to get Daughter into the ped., but was told they were swamped and to give her support at home, watch for the warning signs, blah, blah, blah. Vomiting stopped. Thurs., Fri,- the fever continued (102-104) along with headache, aches and pains, fatigue, lack of appetite. Treated her the whole time with round the clock Tylenol/Motrin, fluids, garlic, vitamins, herbals. Sat., Sun.- she was weak, but recovering. The runny nose started. Mon.- Husband came home early from work because he wasn't feeling well. That evening, fever began 103. Treated the same as daughter. Tues. Oct. 20- Husband is ill and begins coughing. Daughter starts with a fever again. Was finally able to get her into the ped. She was diagnosed with a sinus infection and put on Amoxicillian. Husband is weak when we get home and still feverish. Wed.-Daughter is still feverish. By evening though she is better, but now has a slight cough. Husband is still quite ill, fever is high and that night has hallucinations, the pain in his bones is terrible. His hands and feet are ice cold while the fever rages. Thurs. -Husband and Daughter appear better. Daughter fever gone, Husband fever low grade. That afternoon Son2 (6yo) comes down with a fever. Started with the same treatment. At 3:30am the first asthma attack occurs. Out comes the nebulizer and Albuterol. Fri- Morning, Husband is weak but no fever, still has cough, sinus pain. Daughter is better but still has cough. Afternoon-Son1 (14yo) starts with the fever. I am not feeling well. Take Son2 to his Asthma doctor. She prescribes him Tamiflu and more asthma meds, looks at me, prescribes me Tamiflu and after hearing that Son1 has it prescribes him it too. Because I know better, I call our pharmacist to see if they have the meds, of course they don't. I find out that there is no liquid Tamiflu for children available. Finally secured 45mg capsules for Son2. Will have to open up the capsule and mix with honey on a spoon for him to take. Two Walgreens later have the 75mg capsules for Son1 and me. Daughter spikes a fever again. Unable to get all the meds until 11:00pm Sat.-Sons1 and 2 and Daughter have fevers. Call ped for Daughter, find out that a lot of children are relapsing like this. Told there is nothing to do but continue care. I never got the fever. I just have the cough, aches and pains and headache. The children are all struggling with the fever. Husband is weak and gets tired easily, but is better. Sun.-today-The fevers are down in the children except for Son1, he has fever and sore throat. Everyone is coughing. Everyone is weak. I am doing fine, why I was able to fight this off, I don't know. My symptoms were never as bad as anyone's even before the Tamiflu. Hopefully tonight I will get some sleep and not be checking everyone on the hour for fevers and breathing. Here is what I have learned. If you have children, get them on Tamiflu as soon as they show signs of illness. I wish I would have gotten Daughter on Tamiflu so she wouldn't be so sick. Next time I will take her to Son2's specialist because she can prescribe the Tamiflu. Found out the primary care peds. won't prescribe it unless the children are high risk. The specialist will prescribe it for anyone in the family because it is so difficult to keep Son2's lungs clear. Buy more Motrin/Tylenol. I'm glad that we were prepared, and I thought we had enough of everything. But the fevers have lasted longer than I estimated. I am down to 1/2 bottle each of children's Motrin/Tylenol. Also, the caregiver is going to be very tired from being up all night taking care of everyone. And when the caregiver gets sick also...so have meals in the freezer ready to go into the oven. Make the meals light and comfort foodish, (yeah I'm making up words) as appetites will be very low. I underestimated this also. My kids are homeschooled so I'm guessing that they picked this up at the grocery store, football or maybe church. We were careful, handwashing, sanitizer, supplements etc. Everyone is still sick. I'm hoping that since we caught this now, we will be spared later. At least getting this now, I was able to get meds for us. I was told that the new shipments for Tamiflu were not due until Dec. I was one of the last people to get the 45 mg capsules of Tamiflu also. I'm just grateful that that capsule roughly worked out to the correct dosage for my Son2's weight. The doctor said not to go out of the house for another 2 weeks so nobody picks up something else while their immune systems are down, Husband cannot do that but the rest of us can. I'm so grateful I prepped. I pray everyone here stays well and recovers quickly if you get this flu. |

Kid #1 - came home seeming fairly normal from school but tired. within hour sudden 103 fever
a few days later kid#2 - seemed a bit fussy, not his happy self in am 1 hour after bedtime where he felt normal, quick sudden fever of 104 a few days later kid #3 - was slightly fussy, predicted flu, 2 hours later fever of 102+ one kid tested for flu - confirmed. assumption in that office is seasonal flu is not here yet - and my kids did have their flu shots early sept. pediatrician assumed by incubation and symptoms all were flu. sudden high fever telltale sign. all fevers were on the very high range for my kids. high fever on and off for a few days. one kid got rash. one kid got more congested. waiting for rest of family to get it . . . . |
| PP -- what kind of rash did your child get? Curious.. |
I'm completely chilled. I happen to think most people are hypochondriacs. |
How does my taking my daughter to a clinic, getting her nose swabbed, and being informed that her positive flu swab equates to H1N1 somehow devolve into support for your feeling that most people are hypochondriacs? You sound like YOU are the one with pathology if you can't accept that this flu is actually going around and a lot of people have it. |
| My 3yo was fine on Wednesday, then during the night had a croupy cough which continued Thursday morning so I kept him home. Still acted fine, playing and eating and no fever, but having the bad cough. Fast forward 8 hours, the cough had turned into wheezing, fever of 102, vomiting, and we were sent to the hospital by the urgent care clinic. Spent the night in the hospital, continued having nebulizer treatments, and is now home taking Tamiflu and an oral steroid. Cough is nearly gone, no fever, but very achy, weak and irritable. I just pray this is it and there's no "second round" for us. |
Nah we aren't hypochondriacs. We're old Jewish ladies, or so says Jon Stewart. http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-october-15-2009/doubt-break--09 |
