It helps if you tell us what the "staple stores" are that you are trying to avoid. Also what you consider "cost $$$$" to be.
I think 2nd hand $20 HA dresses are insane. I'd never spend that much buying a hand me down for a little kid who will grow out of it soon. But I most likely shop at all the "staple stores" you are trying to avoid.... |

I keep trying to love Hanna, but it fits my DD horribly. She's thin, so the dresses fit like tents. The classic leggings are too baggy. The skinny leggings dont have enough stretch to fit over her heels. Our trip to the Hanna store a few weeks ago was a total fail.
I'm a big fan of the jeans and shorts at Osh kosh. They have adjustable waists and hold up really well. The skinmy jeans fit my DD great. Much better than Gap or Old Navy. We always get leggings at Target. They hold up well enough and are easy to replace. My DD is thin so we can size down (or wear last year's leggings) for a capri fit. |
Target leggings wear out so fast on my kids its like they are disposable. |
I'm the PP who buys $20 second hand HA dresses. I agree, but started buying a size up (she's in 3Ts or kid's XS and wearing size 110 in HA) and they last for at least a year. They start by hitting a little above her ankles (which she loves because it's a "long dress like Elsa", of course), then it ends up right below her knees by the time she outgrows it. And she's also decidedly not a skinny kid, so HA's wider cut fits her much better than Boden or anywhere like Target. |

Check out Uniqlo. Lots of basics and good quality, also very cheap.

Did you try the scooter-skirts from HA (the ones with built-in shorts)? My kid loves those and we have them in a lot of colors. They do run big, so we definitely size down (my kid can wear 2 sizes smaller than her “real” size from other stores). Their ribbed velour leggings are also a good fit and work well for winter when they need something thicker than regular leggings. Those are not huge and not too small in terms of the opening at the bottom. |
We didn't try the scooter skirts because anything with an elastic waist tends to fall down on my DD. She needs an adjustable waist or a close fit, like leggings. We could probably size down a bunch, but I don't want her in a super short skirt. We'll have to try the velor leggings this winter. They were too warm for back to school clothes. |
| Gap Outlet has great quality relative to prices and some cute styles. |
+1 |
Not too familiar with girls' clothing, but uniqlo is good for skinnier fits for boys' clothing. |
The skirts run somewhat long as well, so even a size or 2 down generally won’t be too short unless she is really tall. |
+1 We had one pair that lasted only a single outing, and my kids are not overly rough with their clothes. Their Hanna leggings, on the other hand, look new by the time we consign them. |
I cannot believe you pay that much for second hand . I buy HA new dresses on sale for 20-25. |

I find Tea on sale (their site or NordstromRack) to be fairly reasonable and definitely long-lasting. For each season, I buy 2-3 dresses for DD on sale, and I never pay more than $15. I buy leggings from Old Navy to go with them.
I also like Cat & Jack (Target). |
I prefer used in general for environmental reasons (and so I don't stress when she covers them in mud or markers). New they're $22-26 + shipping for the twirl power dresses, versus $13-18 with shipping included for the last three I've bought used. I mean, you do you, but it's slightly cheaper, I can get exactly what I'm looking for, and it's better for the environment. |
