MIL is still in parenting mode. She wants to make sure you’re saving enough money. Your ILs probably struggled to save in their early years so she may be thinking the same is true of you, too.

It’s also possible the beach house rental cost them more than they were expecting and had budgeted for the vacation, but they still wanted the week of family togetherness.

Either tell her you got it on sale or you decided to splurge “for just this week.”
