Pennywise, pound foolish: Beach edition

Next time they say something to you about that, just say cheeze-its were on sale and the price was lower than the generic. Done. They'll respect that. There are also some things where buying the store brand doesn't save money since the taste or quality is lower. It's also OK to say that!

We buy tons of store brand but for cheeze its if we buy them it must be brand. Big difference in taste if you like cheeze its.

"Pennywise, pound foolish" doesn't mean what you think it means.

Would you rather be sitting in a nice spacious beach house eating generic cheese snacks or in a tiny, crowded place, blocks from the beach enjoying Cheezits and Pepsi?

+1

Really OP? You want to complain about this?

Well, for starters, you don’t can know how to spell the brand name.

And that is germane to this topic how exactly?

I still don't think the double stuff has enough cream but the mega stuffed has too much.

And where oreo's are concerned a thread hijack should be excused!

I used to buy generic brands of almost everything, thinking it really didn't matter and I was saving a lot. But then I realized actually a lot of the generic brands of certain things were much worse than the name brands (there were a lot of examples of this but right now I'm thinking of generic brand ziplock bags--which never locked, generic Sudafed--I swear it didn't work nearly as well even though it supposedly is exactly the same, store brand Graham crackers--even my toddler wouldn't eat them, generic floss--breaks every time)...and now I feel like a snob.

Also, it's rude of your in laws to criticize what you bought.

Pennywise pound foolish would be the opposite of this, if anything. Really, it would be something like driving 20 miles to the Walmart to get a 50 cent discount on the off brand Cheetos instead of walking to the corner store to get the premium brand. You think you're saving money but you're actually wasting both time AND money to save your 50 cents. What you describe is just prioritizing spending. But they do sound rude.

Because this person is on a tirade about how buying Cheez Its is an absolute must and cant even spell.

Every summer we stay in a gorgeous large house that costs my inlaws >$10k for the week. Every year my MIL assigns me hand soaps for the bathrooms and she brings TP. She always brings single ply Scott. And every year in the many lists and double checking to get all my kids’ stuff packed I forget to bring decent TP.

I do exactly the same thing. We rented a 7k/week beach house and I went straight to Walmart and ALDI as soon as we arrived. I know it’s ridiculous, I can’t help it. Frugality at the consumer-products-level is deep in my bones.

OP doesn't have a problem with her ILs spending money where they want to spend it and saving it where they want to save it.

It's when they open their mouths and share their unasked-for opinions on how OP spends HER money that's where the problem comes in.

A lot of people understand buying generics. That is not the issue.

Oh my MIL gives me some flak for that, too. It doesn’t bother me much. She usually goes out and buys her own brand name versions of the generic groceries I bought.

Why are you even going on vacation with these cheapos OP? That is your real problem. I don't think family should vacation with each other unless they really like each other. Life is too short to waste time.

Clearly that is not the only two options for the OP. So no one should scold her for buying name brand if she wants. And personally I woukd eat better food overvstaying in a huge place for one week. Some generic stuff is fine, some is not. You do not get to decide that for others.
