OP here, haha It is funny the turn this thread is taking, I was planning to send this thread link to my DH but I won't now because he is getting totally misrepresented here (or maybe I will, he might find this funny). We never talked about what to do with the money from the car (because we never intended to sell it) but it is clear in my head that it is his and I don't care for it! The other funny thing is he doesn't care for it either otherwise he would have been very interested in selling the car. So please you all can calm down I am 100% happy with our "weird" financial arrangement!
Now, back to the topic, I find the idea of buying a used minivan interesting, that was the first car my husband suggested (a new one though) but I was like if we are going to get a new car we might as well get the one we really liked (third row SUV). But I think a used mini van might be a good compromise. Thanks |

You don’t need the new 3 row Subaru, which is what I assume you want.
If you won’t use it much and mostly will use it for taking kids places, get a used minivan. If you find that you use it more than you thought, get the Subaru you really want in 2-3 years. You may be loving city life with 2 preschoolers, but schlepping 3 kids and all their stuff on public transit or with a stroller is a whole new ball game. |
+1. If you're completely loaded so that it's not a big deal at all to spend $36k for a new car in addition to keeping an old car around when you have minimal plans to use either car, then just do that. But then why are you asking? What do you want to hear from us? |

I would buy a Van for shlupping the kids and their stuff. 3 kids is tight in a small car, you want room for diaper bags, books and other misc crap they accumulate. Plus you may want to carpool places 4 year from now.
I would keep the small car for whichever adult needs a car and doesnt have the kids. The au pair may want to go places on the weekend at the same time as you. Or in the evening the same thing. Your lives will change 2-3 year from now as the kids all get older. |

OP here, not that it matters, the car we want is a WV Atlas
|
| Mini van. You can buy a car you really like in 15 years when it dies and your twins are flying the nest. |
VWs are shit cars. But it sounds like it will fit your family perfectly, and I mean that in all seriousness. Fit you guys to a tee. |
Is your husband going to help pay for it? |

2) Also DH bought the small car before we got married so any money he gets from it will not go toward the new car and he doesn't think we will get much money (maybe $6-7K) for it so he is not much interested in selling it. Uh... |
| You want to buy a VW after all this horseshit VW owners have just been through? |
This is not necessary, but I guess there is a lot of shitty people around here who will only post negative stuffs... |
| What's your hhi? Is 36k a big stretch? That's about what we paid for our minivan a few years ago and I really love it. |
OP here, yes we looked into minivan, I didn't realize they were that expensive. It will wouldn't be a stretch if we were using it daily. But yeah I think maybe it is going to be a used minivan. |
To your other question, we will be paying it up from using our saving but not sure I want to spend that type of money for the car to seat in the driveway. |
