Question for former SAHM's who work PT low paid jobs by choice

Anonymous
My assistant is PT and was tired of being a sahm. Her kids are actually in highschool now. She has been with me for almost 3 years, makes decent hourly pay, no benefits, but loves having a reason to get out of the house. She works 9-2

Also, its awesome for me. She isnt as stressed out as my previous FT assistants bc she has a good work/home balance. She also brings me homemade food a lot

I am always surprised there aren't more of these job opportunities. It seems like many jobs could be done well in 25 hours a week, and then you open up your pool of applicants and often don't need to pay expensive benefits.

I went to work part time working retail. I really enjoyed it because it was a store that I enjoy. Schedule was pretty flexible, too. Honestly, I would not have wanted to work in a preschool after being a SAHM for so many years. I needed a break from young kids. Now that my kids are older, I think I would enjoy the young kids again.

I did this and my advice it to really understand how you will be affected by taxes. I set my exemptions to 0 and then still have extra withheld.. The exemptions/withholdings are set up like you are a one income earning family and yours is the only income. You need to just be sure that you are having the additional taxes withheld. Your every dollar will be taxed at the marginal rate of your dh's last dollar. Some people don't understand this and then are unpleasantly surprised.

So I put all my $ into a 401k and my school matches it. So I don't get taxed for my salary since i never get paid!

That is a great way to do it. I did that at one job but at another one I was not eligible for the 403b as a part time employee, and no match.
