They tend to live off campus in shared group houses.

Actually, I'm surprised that my DCs' dorm monitoring is way stricter than anything I experienced in school in the late 70's.

Even back in the 80's it was pretty hard to get away with smoking pot in a dorm room. You could smell it all up and down the hallway. Incense did not help, lol. They would light up, take a few quick tokes before the RA noticed and figured out where the smell was coming from.

Most of the pot smoking was done in off campus locations that I saw. Now that many of the dorms are now completely smoke free I would imagine that it's even less likely to find someone smoking pot in a dorm. Like I said, it's not exactly a secret when someone is doing it.

Would you be delighted they weren't seriously considering a pair of top 20 schools because they just wanted to go [party] with high school friends at the flagship?

Top 20 schools don't party?

If a kid is mainly going to school to party you might as well save a few bucks and send them to a flagship, right?

I'm guessing that Op's daughter simply wants to be closer to home and have some familiar faces with her. That's why she's picking the flagship.

This! My roommate and I were very different, but always glad I didn't take the easy route. By the time, I pulled a high school best friend into my dorm as a sophomore we both had a wide circle of new friends, which meant more fun for everyone.

So far both of my sons have gone the random route. And they've both found two pretty good friends in their roommates? Plus learned they have the flexibility to go into an unfamiliar situation, on their own, and make it work.
