Back in 1984 Doug Flutie's Hail Mary pass changed admissions at BC forever.

The exposure and the increase in football money took them from the middle of the second tier to, at least, the hottest non Ivy/MIT school in New England.

As has been noted on here, UMBC has done all the work necessary to be a solid second tier school but both students and ranking organizations haven't really noticed.

At my DC's standard MC HS, they are still known as UMBC, U Made Bad Choices and kids from the neighborhood who end up their, likely travel home many weekends.

On here, we have the UMD troll who keeps stating the obvious. The point is that Maryland has two national class in-state schools.

I hope this wakes everyone up. I hope it pulls in a bunch of OOS students and increase the OOS fraction from 5%, who stay around on weekends and drop the admissions rate from 57%.

Anyway, congratulations UMBC.

MD doesn’t have any national class in state schools. They caught a tremendous team having an off night.

Nooooooo.... that's not what happened at all. Did you watch the game? UMBC legitimately outplayed and destroyed UVA, they weren't just having an "off" night. Give credit where it's due.

Honestly, I don't care if they lose in the next round.
I liked seeing douchy UVA assume they had the game in the bag and end up getting trounced.

What is truly great is two of the three biggest upsets in NCAA BB happened to UVA: yesterday, Chaminade in the early 80's. In some ways Chaminade was a bigger upset (not even an NCAA Div 1 team), but the game was not important. This was a NCAA tourney game.

The other bug upset was when Villanova beat Georgetown for the NCAA. But 'Nova was not an automatic bid.

As a Hokie, I am so happy.

Frankly, I have been waiting for a #1 seed to lose to a 16 since the tourney expanded. Almost happened a few times, but this was a 20 point drubbing.

Go Retreivers!

You forgot when Richmond beat Billy Owens-led Syracuse in 1991, the first time a 15 seed beat a 2 seed.

Does UVA alums care? None of the UVA grads I know seem to follow UVA sports. If they personally play sports, they're into tennis, golf and running...kids might play lax or rugby. Not a lot of basketball and football fans, in my experience.

Then you don’t now very many because all of the ones I know where way into the season and are pretty bummed. UVA has a good amount of school spirit, most alums I know still go to football and basketball games. And I’m from Richmond so I know tons there and in the DMV.

Take it to the sports forum? This is so dumb. UVA is still a great school. If their basketball team never wins another game, people will still want to go there.

Nope. Many of us hope our kids will attend Uva and could care less about sports.
