Let's all laugh at UVA

To bring this back to college and university discussion.

Back in 1984 Doug Flutie's Hail Mary pass changed admissions at BC forever.

The exposure and the increase in football money took them from the middle of the second tier to, at least, the hottest non Ivy/MIT school in New England.

As has been noted on here, UMBC has done all the work necessary to be a solid second tier school but both students and ranking organizations haven't really noticed.

At my DC's standard MC HS, they are still known as UMBC, U Made Bad Choices and kids from the neighborhood who end up their, likely travel home many weekends.

On here, we have the UMD troll who keeps stating the obvious. The point is that Maryland has two national class in-state schools.

I hope this wakes everyone up. I hope it pulls in a bunch of OOS students and increase the OOS fraction from 5%, who stay around on weekends and drop the admissions rate from 57%.

Anyway, congratulations UMBC.

MD doesn’t have any national class in state schools. They caught a tremendous team having an off night.

If that make you feel better, keep repeating it to yourself. In the meantime, we’re laughing!

George Mason was a Cinderella NCAA team a dozen years ago and people still talk about it. If it doesn’t do a full Flutie/BC, it certainly shoots up applications an bestows hundreds of millions of intangible dollars on the university.
Good on you, UMBC.

Hard to believe UMBC lost by 50 points to Albany recently.

Wow, I thought this thread was a joke and just checked the score. Go Retrievers!

I don’t care that much about basketball. And I don’t have strong feelings about either school either way. But like a lot of people, I like an underdog. Good for UMBC. Never, ever count someone out.

Pretty amazing job by the retrievers!

I will say that the UVA coach's post-game interview was the definition of class. No blaming refs or excuses. Just compliments for UMBC.

I think they have to win another game for it to resonate with applicants. Sweet 16.

I took some grad classes at UMBC and was very pleasantly surprised. I grew up nearby and always thought of it as a step up from community college. Obviously it has changed a lot and will definitely put it on the college list for my kid. I just hope it doesn't become too hard to get into! Go retrievers!

UMBC played a good game.

Not sure what happened to UVA. But they totally blew it. Sounds like the underestimated their opponent to put it mildly.

UVA has one style of play, and when they get frazzled or shaken they don’t have a back up plan. Bennett didn’t instruct his team to change their method, even after halftime, even after they were down by 10 or 16 and then 20. It was pathetic. You cannot be so rigid, it’s not a one size fits all. UVA knows all the ACC teams and what makes them tick, but as for an out of conference team, they didn’t do their homework. I suspect they, just like everyone else, was studying for their Sunday game and that team. And look what happened. You have to change your play if what you’re doing isn’t working. UMBC scored 52 points in the second half alone, more than most opposing teams score in an entire game against UVA this season. Kudos to UMBC. UVA didn’t have an off night, they just refused to accept the opponent and change their style to accommodate. Too rigid. It failed.

UVA plays that style which to be incredibly effective requires 100 percent of perfection and practice. There is no room to focus or practice in game strategy shifts. That style is beautiful to watch if you love sports and it gave UVA a dominating season in this years best basketball conference as well as a number 1 ranking with a team of unheralded and mid major level players. It's very consistent in its results but when playing a 6 game national tournament you are often going to run into a hot team. UMBC was on a hot streak in their conference tournament. When the UVA style falls behind it can't catch up. HOWEVER... they get into the tournament with a high seed every year and one year they may win it all. When you consistently get in then one year you win it when the breaks go your way or you have that one special take charge leader on the team.
