No it’s a Christian tradition, not mentioned in the scripture but has biblical roots. That pagan business is a bunch of malarkey created by conservative Protestants to scare people. It isn’t pagan, especially if those observing it aren’t pagan.

I never thought of it or Valentines as Pagan. I thought Valentines was in honor of the priest who martyred for marrying soldiers against the commanders' orders because of the thought that marriage distracted the soldiers.

Catholicism is Christianity with some extra sprinkled in.

I thought Romans 10:9 is what makes one an Christian "If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

Catholics don't worship saints or Mary. They are not God. You don't get Catholicism.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, the observation of the period where Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert. This is clearly mentioned in the New Testament. Episcopalians and Catholics observe this period in the 40 days leading up to Easter by emulating Christ and giving up some worldly pleasure.

Post Reformation Protestant sects don't observe Lent. They aren't supposed to have any worldly pleasures left to give up.

One thing that is VERY clear in the New Testament is that no Christian is supposed to nitpick or criticize someone else's sin or observance (see Matthew 7:3 -5). Once you start down the road of thinking you get to decide who is a true representative of some religion, you have entered cultist territory.

Op here - When you take up the covenant that Abraham took with God and Jesus afterwards renewed through the completion of the Law you are to forsake pagan and other civilizations' traditions traditions. You are also not supposed to invent new things such as purgatory, erecting statues and pictures of saints and Mary, rosary beads etc. You are not supposed to mix Christianity with folklore and other traditions.
You are in the covenant with Abrahamic God, God of Old Testament, renewed and purified through the Blood of His Son Jesus Christ and sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
It's all laid out in the New Testament.
Everything else is another religion, not Christianity.

Glad to know I'm not alone. I've also had to cut off friendships because every time we got together, I would be badgered about my religious beliefs (I'm Jewish) and warned that I'd burn in hell unless I adopted THEIR belief system.

is there something in the Evangelical code that tells them to hug the "unsaved" whenever they seem them? There was this one particularly irritating guy who would keep telling me what would happen to Jews who didn't convert, I'd get annoyed and tell him I didn't want to hear it, and then he'd swoop in for a tight hug held for at least 5 seconds. I finally cut him out of my life, but it struck me as so incongruous to tell someone that G-d doesn't approve of them and then hug them. It was weird.
