Do it yourself then

Oh please. They should simply increase prices by 20 percent so they don’t force their clients to divvy up cash in tiny envelopes and write each person’s name on them. It’s silly.

You can add tip on the card in most salons. No need to carry envelope.

They have the envelope there. No one carries them.

Op here. That's exactly what I did.

I would go ahead & tip a generous $45.

$50 just seems a bit too high unless they took me as a walk-in or did an exceptional job.

Do most people tip $5 for a good shampoo?

HATE this. It’s inconvenient and I don’t like facilitating tax fraud.

Do you really count out the $1s?

I'd probably do $45 to stylist and $7 to shampoo person.

Some salons do this. Very few, but they are out there.

The MOST annoying part of salon tipping to me is when they don't let you add to your credit card bill. I rarely carry cash so if I forget to bring some it's a hassle.

I'm so tired of tipping, BUT, I actually tip the shampoo person $10. They do magnificent job and usually massage my hair for about 10+ minutes

In this scenario, I would probably give stylist $25, and to $10 shampo girl, who does do a lot of the work.

Really? I would think rounding up to 45 is generous.

I look at it and think if I can spend $220 on highlights and a haircut, does $6 make a difference in my life?

Why are highlights $220 in the first place?

My highlights are $195 and I don't think they stylist ever takes more than 20-30 minutes to put in the foils. Then she checks on them once and that's it. I never see her again. I blow dry my own hair.

The shampoo person does almost as much.
For me, I tip $30 for stylist and $5-$10 for shampoo person.

I will say that I have thin hair and only get a half head of highlights. If my hair was thicker or required more time, I'd tip 20%.

I don't tip the owner when she cuts my hair. You guys tip the owner?

I particularly hate the expectation that you tip the stylist, shampoo person, blow dry person, etc. At the (small) salon I go to, the owner cuts my hair. Etiquette used to state that you don't generally tip the salon owner, but it's clear to me that it is expected now. I have told her that I'm not tipping everyone separately, and that perhaps a tip share/pool might be the way to go, much like they do in restaurants.

It just needs to stop. I'll pay the price, and while we're at it, can we please switch to a VAT and stop adding it on top of everything?

You tip at a restaurant - what’s the difference. Someone is helping you and doing a service so you tip them. People rely on these tips for their livelihood.

You are really worried about tax fraud on 45 dollars. When I give 5 dollars to the homeless guy should I be worried too? What is wrong with you people - if you can afford the trip to the salon you can afford the tip. It’s just a tip not some big tax evasion plan.
