Men wear the uniform to all such events -- a) khaki pants, button-front shirt and navy blazer or b) dark jeans or charcoal slacks, black crew-neck tee (possibly with sweater over it) and sport coat in a tweedy or small-check pattern. This works for all men over 40; choice between (a) or (b) largely depends on several factors, primarily how WASPY/preppy they are and whether they think of themselves as hipsters (note: this is not the same as whether they are hipsters). At my college reunion, a classmate gestured toward the crowd at the bar and said "My husband's the one in the navy blazer . . . oh, they're all wearing navy blazers, aren't they?" Yes, they were.
Interestingly, the uniform thing starts really early. When kids hit the Bar/Bat Mitzvah years, the girls (and their mothers) agonize over dresses, desperately trying to avoid wearing the same thing as anyone else, while the boys (and their mothers) spend 20 minutes shopping for khakis, a couple of button-down shirts, a couple of ties, a blazer and loafters. This is the uniform for all male guests who are not Jewish, and, therefore, don't need to buy a suit for their own Bar Mitzvah. When you pull up to fetch your son, it's just a sea of boys in navy blazers and khakis with neon light ropes and souvenir baseball caps.
