How is Temple University these days?

He thought there was a good energy, friendly, lots of academic and other opportunities, lots of school spirit, and kids that were happy to be there and working hard. And he liked its location in a big city.

We are in NOVA and DS probably does not have the grades to get into UVA or William & Mary, so other in-state choices would be James Madison, VCU, Va Tech (maybe), etc.

But with the scholarship, Temple would be about the same cost, or even a bit less expensive, than in-state options.

My sense is that Temple is not perfect, but is getting better - it is less of a "commuter school", the neighborhood around the school is improving, the school is growing, and the caliber of student is getting better. And for kids who are ready to take advantage (I think DS is ready) there are opportunities that are on par with any "elite" school.

I am curious about the DCUM view of Temple, and how it compares to other public schools in VA or elsewhere.

Please share your thoughts.

Thank you!

OP, what did they give? Run the numbers carefully. Our DS was offered $26-28 K for some colleges but it was still less expensive to go to Virginia Universities, especailly after calculating in travel.

Temple is public. It isn't cheap, but it isn't priced like a private.

My kid got $25 from an OOS private, and you are correct that it still costs more than the VA schools. He got $10 from a OOS public, and it costs the same at UVA (before travel).

Temple is a about $41k for OOS.

The ride back and forth to Richmond is not much better.

VCU is about $43k for OOS.

I can’t forget the mob attacks on Temple students last year that were caught on camera....there is no way I’d send my child there.

Other than location, Temple is the better choice. It has a better reputation nationally than the VA schools. Also, Temple is expanding out into the neighborhood so it is getting somewhat better.

That’s like saying other than that iceberg it was a great crossing on the titanic. Tample is a good school that is, unfortunately, located in a ghetto.

I am resurrecting this thread for helpful feedback and input. My DD will be attending and is excited as am I. I have heard the surrounding neighborhood and student safety is much improved from years past. That is really the only concern I have. The academics seem to be consistently solid and it is a Research I university, which is what DD wanted to get training in data analytics and research.

Crowded, impersonal, huge lecture classes.

Crime is actually worse at Penn. This is a few years old, but interesting.
