Evidently there is surveillance tape. There will be a press conference in a couple hours. Players will speak, but not take questions.
Should be interesting.

How is it a press conference if they don't take any questions?

Yep. Guess they figured they could get away with it.
We’ll see what kind of punishment these guys get from the school.

I guess if they make statements in front of the press, they call it a “press conference.”

Citing a source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation, ESPN reported the players could be in Hangzhou for "a week or two" while the situation is resolved. The source told ESPN there is surveillance footage of the players shoplifting from three stores inside a high-end retail center.

They've embarrassed themselves, their school and their country.

I am curious as to where the outrage is from California Attorney General Xavier Becerra about China’s questionable human rights policies. Not this case in particular, but the country’s record in general.

After all, he banned travel to eight US states because of human rights issues.

Yet, travel to China is fine?

The new law took effect in January, outlawing state employees and officials from using tax money to go to states with laws California deems discriminatory in regards to LGBT issues.

The first states on the list were Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee. But late last week, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced that the list has doubled and now includes Alabama, Kentucky, South Dakota and Texas, the second-largest state in the U.S.

“Our country has made great strides in dismantling prejudicial laws that have deprived too many of our fellow Americans of their precious rights,” Becerra said in a statement. “Sadly, that is not the case in all parts of our nation, even in the 21st century.”
Three of the four new states recently moved to protect faith-based adoption or foster agencies who refuse to place children with certain families, such as same-sex couples. Another protects religious expression in schools, including provisions on student organizations that LGBT advocates argue could allow clubs to shun prospective members based on their gender identity.

These players acted immorally (thou shall not steal) and irresponsibly. If this were North Korea they would have created an international fracas, and might even be killled. As it is, their extrication required our country to expend some of its much needed political capital with China, and to call in favors. For that reason, these injudicious young men should be very grateful to our country, and yes the President to the extent he personally intervened to help.

That said, the President should be diplomatic and tactful, and address the young men privately. Presidents do not, and should not, seek public adoration and adulation for all of their good acts. That is not Presidential, that is needy. And I hate to say it but given this President's recent history it rings a bit of the "Master" demanding his due respect from "the Blacks".

Just wrong on all sides.

The players just spoke at their press conference.
They seem apologetic and remorseful.

Ball thanked President Trump and the US government.
Jalen Hill did as well.

Good for them.

I just read that the kids stole at three different stores. What an embarrassment......hope they get suspended for the year.

None. None of UCLA is in Maxine Waters' district.

And no, not all black people know each other.

UCLA is in West LA, one of the wealthiest and whitest districts in California. They have Louis Vuitton stores there so the lads really didn't need to shoplift in China.

GMA had it on top 20 minutes that Trump asked for fair treatment? Hard to say what really happened, why haven’t they released the footage they claim they have? Do you know they accused another b-ball team of the same then dropped?

It's not really hard to say what happened. They tried to shoplift, got caught and it's an embarrassment. I wish Trump would not have intervened and let them suffer the consequences. It sets a very poor example. Maybe intervene after they are a year or two in prison, but not right away.

Fortunately, you're not in charge.
