With so much work on the Chromebook, bad habits are just being reinforced. Should I force DC to practice touch-typing at home? Why isn't typing part of the MCPS curriculum?

TYPING CAMP, call up Landon School right now for their 1 weeker this summer.

I am the PP above you. I just signed up, but there is a waiting list.

Does anyone know of any others, either in MD or VA? We'll go to VA, I don't care. . .

Not sure what the offerings are but tons of schools have camps - sports, academics, fun, arts: Norwood School, GDS, probably Bullis, etc.

Look at Rockville extracurriculars, MoCo college, MoCo rec center, YMCA, JCC, etc.

Before going to a rec center, ask other parents whether the facilities are clean and whether any beefing occurs on the courts.

They don’t have time and money in MCPS to implement this. Parents just have to do it at home, IMO.

We are too late for this summer but I am going to keep it in mind for another summer. They call this class, "Keyboarding," and the description is as follows, "Become familiar with the computer keyboard; locate alphabetic and numeric keys. Emphasis is on mastering the keyboard through touch typing. 10 sessions @ 2 hrs each."

I have to confess that if I were going to sign a teen up for 20 hours of training in something, there are a lot of things I would prioritize beyond touch-typing. Usage makes speed anyway. And typing for dictation purposes only matters if you are a secretary in the 1950s. Students taking notes shouldn't be taking dictation: they should be distilling and summarizing the rewording, because that's where the learning takes place.

Don’t send your kid to a school that uses computers so young. If they can’t type properly they shouldn’t even be using a computer. Get a typewriter and teach them yourself while you homeschool, public school is clearly useless these days.

Thanks, Bethany!
