Are you working with your current school for placement? That should be your 1st conversation.

DD has been homeschooled for the previous year after she had a major problem last year with her previous school

And i do realize this complicates things

Wait. Your child has been homeschooled and you're going to RENT (as in not buy into a coop) in HOBOKEN and you're applying to the top private schools in Manhattan? Are you crazy? Why not just shoot for the Swiss boarding schools?

I was just browsing this forum.. but hold on, we know a couple of formerly homeschooling families in dc whose kids now attend schools like sidwell, gds, maret, etc... is NYC snobbier?!

OP doesn't even plan on living in Manhattan. She's not from some wealthy family moving to the UES and purchasing a coop. She's talking Jersey. She doesn't even know the names of the schools. I didn't even grow up in manhattan and I know the names at least. I doubt OP has the money or prestige to get her kids in such a school.

I said we were *considering* it

Ohhhh NOOOOO!!! Not JERSEY! *faints, crosses self*. Where did she say she didn't know the names?

There's nothing wrong with New Jersey, but it's highly unusual to live in NJ and attend private schools in NYC. For one thing, your paying high property taxes in NJ FOR private schools. Also the commute into the city is hellish for a child to endure on a regular basis. It simply doesn't make any sense. Add on top of that the competition and prep needed to even get into one of these schools. The kind of people who live in the suburbs are different than those who live in the city. It's like moving to Gaithersburg and trying to send your kids to sidwell.

Regarding the names, thats what this entire thread is about.

OP here. Thank you for not being judgemental. We actually live in the middle of DC currently, and DD has lived there since she's been born, so we're not suburban. And *IF* we lived in NJ, it would be Hoboken (very urban and not Jersey-like whatsoever). I was pretty tired when I started this thread, so maybe I worded it incorrectly, so that's probably on me, however, I do have a good number of names so far, I just need help regarding which to try for, what's a good fit, etc. thanks for the info re the commute and property tax, jersey seems less attractive now.

PP here. I'm very familiar with Hoboken. Your child would be the ONLY child attending one of these schools from hoboken. First off, Hoboken is very young. It's just not somewhere you live and send kids to NY privates. You also mention property taxes... NJ has some of the highest property taxes. Worst state to choose if you're going to go private. Really there are plenty of suburbs with fantastic public schools. VERY good public schools. There are wealthy enclaves all over the tristate where kids attend public schools. You either live in the city and go private OR live in the burbs and go public. You need to learn more about NY because your plan is nonsensical. Also, most good schools in Manhattan are on the upper east or upper west. Are you planning on taking the path to the NY subway uptown? We are talking over an hour each way for your child to attend private school. Your plan just doesn't make any sense.

We actually only thought of Hoboken because we have family friends there who send a daughter to school in NYC. Not a top 10, but a good school. Probably path. Although it's more likely we'd just live in manhattan

Do you have 50k plus for tuition and the money to support the lifestyle ( hamptons rental or owning a country/ hamptons house), car service, ski trips, taking kids to Europe, charity events etc)?

If so...why aren't you living in NY? Go and buy a nice two bedroom for $2 million in cash and apply to NY privates. That's the world you're looking into. People whose kids attend NY privates have TONS of money and make DC privates look like a joke. It is an entirely different world. You're really better off sending your child to prep school. It would be easier for your child to get in and more financial aid if you're not wealthy.

What do houses in the Hamptons have to do with school? My DD goes to a private in NYC (no, not dalton, trinity, hm, yadda yadda but it's a perfectly reputable school) and yes, we do go to Europe, charity events and take the occasional ski trip, but I drive her to school and if we go to the beach, we just rent a house.

I'm from NYC, and hell, I'd rather live in Hoboken than Westchester. Lol.

Especially the FA kids!

OP, the top whatever schools aren't all there is (not that you'be implied that) your kid will get a great and "prestigious" education at basically any NYC private in NYC. You don't have to put yourself through the stress and whatnot by only "shooting" for schools with microscopic acceptance rates.

Wow.

Try as hard as you can to stay in DC and get her in a good private here. It's worth it.

We are private school parents and also educated in private schools but if we were to move to NYC it'd be a no brainer for us to move to Westchester and have the kids finish out at the local excellent public schools. Lots of great towns with great schools. Bronxville, Rye, Larchmont, Chappaqua, Pleasantville, Scarsdale, just to name a few. Once the kids are finished with their education then we'd move to Manhattan itself.

When you say prep school are you referring to boarding school? That could be a decent option for the OP. Lots of boarding schools to pick from, kid will likely get in somewhere with a decent reputation at the least. Can come home on weekends and the boarding schools have multiple vacations throughout the school year.

What if OP doesn't want to put her kid in any public school? What if her kid doesn't want to be away 180 days a year?
Anonymous
Not OP but how low are acceptance rates for schools like friends seminary and Brooklyn friends?
Anonymous
Hello OP. The NYC privates are light years ahead of the DC privates. They also cost about 3 x the DC rates.

If you are thinking of living in Hoboken NJ then you should check out the local public schools. They are solid.

Or move to Greenwich CT and go to their schools, the best in Fairfield County.
