The reason this is happening is greed. There was a thread on this site a couple weeks ago about DeVos’ decision to get rid of the stupid rules Obama put in place regarding accusations of sexual assault on college campuses.
Interesting that I can no longer find that thread - the people who posted were OVERWHELMINGLY in favor of the change because the process Obama put in place did not provide the accused with due process. I guess the thread was deleted because it made so much sense.

The rules Obama put in place actually place the burden of trials, evidence-gathering, convictions, etc., on the administration of colleges and universities. So, in essence, someone who was charged with a crime - yes, a crime - were to be judged by university people, not the courts.

I am good friends with someone who was very closely involved in the case. She did it for money. Was not her first time doing so either. The child porn charge stemmed from sharing of nude pics of her and she is underage.

But what you are describing is the antithesis of the Obama rules. I agree colleges should largely be out of the process, but under the current process the colleges are judge, jury, and executioner - often with the accused being denied even the most basic due process rights.

I no longer work at a university directly dealing with these issues so I haven't followed the detailed specifics of DeVos approach. Maybe it is also flawed. But the Obama rules are a real black mark for an administration otherwise focused on justice issues.

Sorry but Devos is actually correct on this one.

Colleges should not be mandated by the federal government to deprive students of their due process rights. Every citizen in this country, even murderers, has this right. Colleges are not skilled enough or equipped to properly deal with and investigate a sexual assault accusation. Universities should never be in the business of investigating and trying sexual assault. Any allegations of sexual assault should be turned over to the authorities. Period.
