CHEC

No real reason except a PP wrote that teachers struggle with students with very limited English. Does that mean that this educational campus gets a number of brand new immigrants?

For 6th-8th I would imagine there are lots of new immigrants.

If they aren't receiving ELL services, they don't show up in the data as an ELL student.

The high school is full of ELL students who recently arrived to the US

Tukeva used to control everything, including the grades. She also took very good care of students who reported to her. The place used to run like a mafia. Not sure if things have changed.

I worked at Bell Multicultural HS many years ago. One day after applying to DCPS, The certification office told me that if hired, I would be getting a DC teaching certification since MD had a reciprocity with DC. A day later I received a call that Tukeva wanted to meet me. She hired me on the spot. A month later I received a one year temporary certification in the mail. Believing it was a mistake, I went to the certification office downtown and learned that it was not a mistake. I was informed that had I worked in any other DCPS schools, I would have been granted a 5 year certification. Needless to say Tukeva was very angry when I asked her to release me at the end of the school as I cold not risk my provisional certification to expire at the end of August. She then totally ignored me. I did not know if I was going to work at Bell for the upcoming year. DCPS Central Office said I could not transfer unless Tukeva released me. I then found a job in MD and since I was employed as a teacher and had done my 6 credits, my certification was renewed. However, I was paid as a full time substitute, since DCPS had not officially released me. Finally in December, after the certification specialist had personally made a visit to DCPS headquarters, I was hired as a full time employee.
She seems to do whatever she wants and does not follow DCPS rules or regulations. Over the years, she has hired and fired a lot of excellent teachers for reasons other than competence or student achievement.
I wonder why DCPS gives her total autonomy and why she has not changed her school to a charter after being the

The reason DCPS Central gives Tukeva a lot of autonomy is that she is very good at managing CHEC's image and telling Central exactly what they want to hear. She puts a lot of stress on teachers which leads to high teacher turnover. A lot of what she asks of teachers is unreasonable busy work. I heard from a teacher friend of mine that Tukeva even told them a year or so ago that 75% of kids need to get As and Bs or teacher evaluation will be docked. She is great at sucking up to the not so bright top admin people at Central so they think she is a rock star. I would never send my kid to CHEC. She hires good teachers but then drives them away with her micromanaging and dictatorial style.

Any school that has a 60-70% turn over of teachers and had a website directly setup about the school by a teacher to release true goings on at the school deserves some investigation and overbite. Maybe now that the new Chancellor, an outsider, is in charge, things will change. But somehow I doubt it's happening any time school based on his responses to the suspension issues at DCPS!

I found out today that one of Tukeva’s star new hire teachers (the AP Messiah as I heard her referred to), quit from stress this week. I’m not surprised but given how awesome this teacher was and the fact that she was everything Tukeva wanted, I’m surprised she already quit. I knew from the start she was never going to last there. When will central office finally do something about tukeva?

No, Central office won't do anything about Tukeva.
At least the teacher quit on her own and did not get fired like dozens of others before her throughout the years.

It truly baffles me though. How can central office be ok about losing a wonderful teacher in dcps due to CHEC and Tukeva’s madness? Is this woman ever going to retire?

One teacher!!! U don't have a clue, teacher at EOTP and especially at CHEC have already left, many of them at not just EOTP at other DCPS so called "great" schools too. Just wait until after the holidays - see who doesn't come back.

The teacher quit because she did not want her teaching career to be over. Tukeva has the reputation and means to make that happen. She is ruthless.

Yes, many teachers quit but this teacher in particular was being hailed as some kind of AP visionary and was already well liked by Tukeva and CO. I wonder what happened.

d.

The teacher may be very well liked but if she does not act like a minion, Tukeva will punish and try to destroy her. It's the way CHEC (formerly Bell Multicultural) has always functioned. Tukeva wants 100% loyalty. Probably the teacher was too ethical or tried to reason with the boss.

^^This is exactly what happened.
