I worked at Bell Multicultural HS many years ago. One day after applying to DCPS, The certification office told me that if hired, I would be getting a DC teaching certification since MD had a reciprocity with DC. A day later I received a call that Tukeva wanted to meet me. She hired me on the spot. A month later I received a one year temporary certification in the mail. Believing it was a mistake, I went to the certification office downtown and learned that it was not a mistake. I was informed that had I worked in any other DCPS schools, I would have been granted a 5 year certification. Needless to say Tukeva was very angry when I asked her to release me at the end of the school as I cold not risk my provisional certification to expire at the end of August. She then totally ignored me. I did not know if I was going to work at Bell for the upcoming year. DCPS Central Office said I could not transfer unless Tukeva released me. However, I was paid as a full time substitute, since DCPS had not officially released me. Finally in December, after the certification specialist had personally made a visit to DCPS headquarters, I was hired as a full time employee. She seems to do whatever she wants and does not follow DCPS rules or regulations. Over the years, she has hired and fired a lot of excellent teachers for reasons other than competence or student achievement. I wonder why DCPS gives her total autonomy and why she has not changed her school to a charter after being the
