A. Swastikas in the other direction are still used by Buddists. IE the people who used it before it was coopted. B. The Nazi swastika was the flag of a party and nation that murdered millions. The Md flag was the flag of a state that remained nominally loyal to the union during the civil war, though failing to provide many union troops, and not abolishing slavery till l late in the war. It may have been later used by Confederate sympathizers, but it was not a symbol of the Confederacy while it actually existed. C. The song lyrics are so absurd as to be funny, actually. D. We judge songs by their content, not their authors, the song is not a monument to Key (not sure why you didnt mention the Key Bridge? Perhaps you don't live here?) E. I suspect you are actually a confed monument defender trying to troll. |
What is wrong with SC flag, the one with tree and moon? MS is the abomination |
| The idiocy that abounds here on good ol' DCUM never ceases to amaze me. Don't you people have actual lives to live, or is your constant state of outrage a beloved hobby? Geez, get a grip and stop searching for things to be offended by. |
| That's Hott! |
Just a FYI but 2/3 of soldiers from Maryland fought for the North.

best flag out there. if propel talk about it, it means you have a good one. Anyone ever hear anyone talking about the North Dakota flag? nope,
it is so stupid the band at Maryland stopped playing Maryland my Maryland because of this line in the song Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum! |
An ugly flag? B***h please. The Maryland flag is iconic. In every thread I see (on other sites) of people discussing straight flags Maryland is always mentioned as the best. It's probably the only one (save... maybe California and Texas) that residents of other states could identify |
does not contradict that few fought for the north. Few fought for the South as well. Most stayed home. Not the least sensible idea, given what the war was like. |
Thou wast ever bravely meek! Put that on the UMd uniforms!
|
its true. The gay pride flag is the only that is better than the quartered arms of Calvert and Crossland. |
Would be happy to replace the national anthem with its bombs bursting in air and unsingable melody with either God Bless America, This Land is My Land, or, America the Beautiful. Much better songs and sentiments. |

Based on what assumptions do you say this?
Maryland's population in 1860 was 687,049. Approximately 85,000 Marylanders fought in the war, of which 1/3 fought for the South (many crossed the line to fight in Virginia units) and 2/3s for the North. That's 12% of the state's population. Massachusetts' population in 1860 was 1,231,057, with around 159,165 soldiers. That's also 12% of the state's population. New York's population in 1860 was 3,880,726, with between 400-460,000 soldiers (numbers are fuzzy due to lack of proper record keeping). Assuming it's the higher, that's 11.8% of the state's population. Georgia's population in 1860 was 1,057,286, with 133,000 soldiers. That's 13% of the state population. Virginia's population in 1860 was 1,596,318 (including what is now West Virginia). Around 150,000 soldiers fought for Virginia (almost all for the South, but some for the North). 9.3% of the population (but remember West Virginia separated when the war began). Maryland seems average compared to other states. Given the divided population I don't see any evidence that "few" fought for the North from Maryland during the Civil War. * Note: official records on the tally of soldiers is murky due to lack of proper records, especially for the Confederacy as so much data was destroyed in the war and these are estimates based on research from a range of historians and government officials. And the Civil War is one of the most exhaustively studied historical subject there is.

Here are the complete words to Maryland My Maryland. The despot's heel is on thy shore, Maryland! His torch is at thy temple door, Maryland! Avenge the patriotic gore That flecked the streets of Baltimore, And be the battle queen of yore, Maryland! My Maryland! Hark to an exiled son's appeal, Maryland! My mother State! to thee I kneel, Maryland! For life and death, for woe and weal, Thy peerless chivalry reveal, And gird thy beauteous limbs with steel, Maryland! My Maryland! Thou wilt not cower in the dust, Maryland! Thy beaming sword shall never rust, Maryland! Remember Carroll's sacred trust, Remember Howard's warlike thrust,- And all thy slumberers with the just, Maryland! My Maryland! Come! 'tis the red dawn of the day, Maryland! Come with thy panoplied array, Maryland! With Ringgold's spirit for the fray, With Watson's blood at Monterey, With fearless Lowe and dashing May, Maryland! My Maryland! Come! for thy shield is bright and strong, Maryland! Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong, Maryland! Come to thine own anointed throng, Stalking with Liberty along, And chaunt thy dauntless slogan song, Maryland! My Maryland! Dear Mother! burst the tyrant's chain, Maryland! Virginia should not call in vain, Maryland! She meets her sisters on the plain- "Sic semper!" 'tis the proud refrain That baffles minions back again, Maryland! Arise in majesty again, Maryland! My Maryland! I see the blush upon thy cheek, Maryland! For thou wast ever bravely meek, Maryland! But lo! there surges forth a shriek, From hill to hill, from creek to creek- Potomac calls to Chesapeake, Maryland! My Maryland! Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll, Maryland! Thou wilt not crook to his control, Maryland! Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the blade, the shot, the bowl, Than crucifixion of the soul, Maryland! My Maryland! I hear the distant thunder-hum, Maryland! The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum, Maryland! She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb- Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum! She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come! Maryland! My Maryland! |
| So, why should Maryland's state song commemorate secession and the Confederate States of America? It's high time we got rid of it. |
It does contradict...because 2/3 is not "few". 2/3 is 66%, therefore MOST fought for the north. |
