Are Tiki Torches a social taboo or faux pas now in light of Charlottesville?

Don't be stupid and light your party exactly as you want.

No you have to reclaim tiki torches for fun and festivity. Don't the racists win! Celebrate Polynesian, life, and love!

Preach! They are NOT co-opting tiki torches!

I think it's unfair to make this association. I might not have a ton of tikis blazing, but a few should be fine.

This. I will buy some for my Labor Day party, because I want to reward the company whose statement against Nazis was stronger than any made by the President.

I went for a walk last Friday morning and someone had several Tiki torches in their trash can. They appeared to be in good condition. Once a negative connection is made, it is hard to let it go. Good for you that you are able to rise above such simple thought processes! Even I, who will continue to buy and use Tiki torches, thought to myself, "not a good time to let your neighbors see you throw your Tiki torches away".

What does that even mean?

That is what the white trash were chanting while the held their torches.

I would never make that kind of connection to tiki torches anymore than I would connect the brand of car that the guy drove into the crowd to that one particular group.

This.

Don't over-think, OP. If you saw one of those thugs in a photo wearing a shirt with a Vineyard Vines logo or a pair of Nikes, would you assume that wearing their clothes is now a quiet method of showing you are a Nazi?

Tiki torches have always been tacky.

I wouldn't use them because of something OP mentioned.

People who are at the party may understand perfectly, but people driving or walking by and seeing it might NOT understand. They may make assumptions about you without knowing the real deal, and then they might come back later and do something to you house or your car. Key it or whatever.

People do this. I do this ! I key the hell out of cars

I only think my neighbors are racists if they are in white sheets, burning crosses at 2 a.m. with a few Obama effigies hanging from the trees. You're good OP.

And tacky can be lots of fun! It's a backyard barbecue, not a state dinner.

OP back. Thank you all for the input. Except for the snarkers, of course.

I think we're going to use light sticks instead. The kind with the chemical stuff inside that you bend and crack it to make it light up. That seems like a decent alternative that will be almost as nice. And it won't cause any unwanted confusion with passersby not understanding what's going on. We only have street parking, and we don't want our cars getting damaged by some whackaloon thinking we're having a kkk rally or something. Even if only 10% of people might think something like that, we live on a busy street, and 10% could still be dozens of people. Not worth the risk.

Try the best approach for the environment.
