What is so great about Princess Diana?

She also, unlike commoners Sarah Ferguson and Kate Middleton, born to British nobility and had royal ancestry.

My mother was such a huge fan of Princess Diana that she named me after her...

I never understood it.

If you had no real job and you were famous, wouldn't you try to work for worthy causes? Most people probably would. The famous people who are coked out and partying all day are mostly really young and/or horrible, vapid people.

My mother's explanation is that Diana seemed like such a beautiful, refined, gentle person, the perfect princess. This was very very early on, right after she married Charles.

My mother is the type of person who is really into "princesses" and is always talking to my daughter about how she should act like a perfect princess.

I think the whole royalty fascination is total nonsense and I just pretend that I was named after the goddess of the hunt.

"My mother loved Greek mythology and wanted me to be a virgin forever.

She wasn't promiscuous. And she did a lot more than "be nice." Get your fat ass of the couch and go clock in some volunteer hours, PP.

Hopefully once Aug 31st is past we can cease to hear endlessly about her and have to see all those old photos brought out again.

Enough already.

What d’ya know. Camilla Bowles has found this forum.
Princess Diana was likely everything you wish you could be. She was beautiful, inside and out. And used her fame to bring attention to many humanitarian efforts.
It’s too bad you don’t know these things.

What Charles was doing was routine yet she acted like it was the biggest betrayer ever! Why couldn't she just suck it up and go on with her duties?

Because of her parents' terrible divorce. There was cheating on both sides and it deeply scarred her. Diana bought into the fairytale as much as anyone. You know, she was only 18 when she started courting Charles, and 19 when she married. Teenagers are dramatic and she saw this as a huge betrayal. Understandable, really.

+1 yes remember we didn't have the internet back then. I remember being in HIGH SCHOOL talking with my girlfriends about what a penis must look like; we all didn't know and couldn't figure out the mechanics of it. My point is, you can't assume she knew about Camilla or that many royals cheat--it was just a different world back then, and as PP said, she "bought into the fairytale as much as anyone." We all did.

And think further back, how JFK was fooling around and the press was hiding it from the public. It is easy for me to believe that Diana was naive, and I suspect it would be hard for my 14 y.o. DD to believe that when hearing the story.

Diana was OK, what I do not understand is the fascination with the other English royals. They seem like the most useless people on earth.
And ugly.
What exactly is the fascination, beyond title?

I blame Disney for perpetuating the princess myth. They don't do anything except show up and wave although I love their hats.

1. you're clearly a lunatic
2. My ass is skinny, really skinny
3. she was promiscuous. Its well known in the UK - there are many, many British musicians, actors, doctors, and "bodyguards" - pretty much any profession of man, she slept with.

I always felt that Kate Middleton was someone similar to Diana in some ways. I'm 36 and agree with most of the PPs on her admirable traits. I suspect I feel the same about her that many felt towards Diana. Although the stories are very different indeed.

Wait, is this the Angelina Jolie thread?

1. She revolutionized the treatment of people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.K.
2. Your ass is shriveled as your prudish soul.
3. If you were stuck in a loveless marriage where you were basically duped into providing an heir and a spare, I don't blame her at all for having sex. She was 19 when she married and stuck with a cold fish whose sexual fantasies included being his lover's tampon. I don't care if she had a lot of sex with a lot of partners, good for her. She earned every O. (Sounds like you could benefit from a few yourself.)

And I've always wanted her sons to do well. That must have caused such heartbreak and confusion for them, to lose their mother that way. Not just a car accident--she was chased down by paparazzi.

You do know that she was chased down by paparazzi because she was with a man she was using to make the man who jilted her jealous. She was away form her "cherished" children for nearly a month as she went from one luxe yacht to the next in her desperate search for love. She is a figure to be pitied rather than revered. The Queen was forced into condoning her bad behavior by people as maulin as you PP.

This is what was so great about Princess Diana.

She was unique bc she actually did something "useful" as a royal...like helping others, charities' fundraisers, etc. She did more than any other royal did in generations. One if the reasons she was so highly favored by the public.
Plus, Charles always had an eye for Camila so the public felt bad for Diana in that regard too.
See how the points are adding up in her favor? I could go on about her apoeal, down to earth (she came across as so relatable esp when William and Harry were born), she had a pretty face, etc.

You are ridiculous. Prince Philip just retired from his royal duties at age 96 and remains the patron of over 700 charities. If you want to applaud the work of anyone start with him. Or even the Queen who has worked everyday for the last 70 years to help England to her fullest extent.

First of all, she was a teenager, had only been with Charles 12 times when they got engaged and did not come from a good (well balanced) family situation. Charles stepped out first with Camilla which led to Diana's infidelities. I can't comment on Diana's intelligence, but she rose up against Charles (and ultimately, the Queen) by becoming more popular than them all. She obviously loved her children and always put them first. I find it hard to believe that William and Harry can even be civil to Camilla and Charles.

Do we know what Williams relationship with Charles is?

Both William and Harry (who is likely not Charles' biological son) have a very good relationship with Charles and Camilla and Camilla's children. We saw them at Ascot together, and they looked genuinely happy with each other.
