FCPS Parents are you happy

The FCPS calendar is bloated beyond belief with extended vacations, teacher "work" days, 2 hour early releases, and way too many snow days.

Garza was total fail in this area.

It's fine with us. We've had our summer vacation and it will be nice for school to finish earlier in the spring.

Sure. I work.

It means I was able to pay for one fewer week of camp this summer.

I really hate the random long four day weekends WITH the two hour early releases. Also hate the supersized christmas vacation and spring break. One week is fine!

The problem with all the one and two days off is that it throws off the weekly schedule and often kids miss things on specific given days.

One week at Christmas. Good Friday and Easter Monday off rather than a full week of Spring Break. Cut down on the teacher work days.

If Snow Days built into the schedule are not used, end the year earlier.

The 2 week winter break is often followed by snow days in January/Feb. which means kids lose out on a lot of learning during that time. Last winter was mild, but I remember a few years ago the kids missed a ton of days in January.

My DW and I are both teachers and would be willing to give up some of the student holiday/teacher workdays. Instead of full days some VA districts schedule 3 hour early release days and the teachers have the rest of the afternoon.

I like this calendar. It has a post Labor Day start, three full days at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks around Christmas, a week for spring break, two 3 hour early release dates at the end of the year AND the are done on June 15.

That calendar is perfection! I LOVE summer and spending time with my kid. We had so much fun this year. I'm so sad that it was such a short summer this year.

I agree. It's a nice balance.

No. I hate it. It sucks and I'm pissed about it.

Labor day is the natural end to summer and it always has. And we don't get out much earlier for the two week start. I don't give a shit about your AP exams (if your kids are that affected by 2 weeks maybe they should not be there) or work schedules. I work full-time, also.

I'm sick of how this school district bows the loud, stick-up-their-ass parents in this area. It's ridiculous.

I don't care for the earlier start either and I agree that it seems it was pretty much decided to benefit AP students, but I will point out they are starting one week earlier, not two. School is getting out one week earlier which matches the earlier start.

Colleges also are starting earlier. And there are children who need more time to prep for the SOL's.

I hate that we are going back before labor day this year. We like to go away those last few weeks of summer when travel is a little less expensive and weather is great in most places. I'd rather have an extra week of summer than 2 weeks off in December.

I also think it is easier to have the first week be a shorter week than to go back for a full week and then have a 3 day weekend.

I think the only thing this thread has proved is that everyone has a different idea of what is the ideal schedule.

I like the two weeks in December; it helps a bit being able to take a trip that first week- not as expensive.

I don't care about start and end with the summer break.

I would prefer year round with several two or three week breaks.

My niece and nephew in California start school this week. They'll be done in May. I have a feeling that's where this is heading.
