Yes! I hate that!

Eh, it's because they have no idea what your name is. I would rather be called "mom" than "Mrs. DH's Lastname."

That doesn't bother me because when I am in the pediatrician's office, my sole role and purpose there is as Mom to the child in question. No one at work calls me Mom. That would be weird.

I personally dislike all the weird nicknames that people use, calling people "Girl", "Mama," "Sister," "Bitch" (especially the last one, for obvious reasons). I'm white, and I get that in other cultures, it's common or a form of endearment, so I guess I'm not offended. I just don't like it. If you know me, call me by my name. If you don't, then "ma'am" is fine. Even "Hey You" is better than "Hey Mama!"

Reminds me of that hipster Train song - "Hey, soul sister. Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo......

Is he Muslim? This is very common. We call each other sisters and brothers.

You probably look like a frumpy mom OP. Go to the mall for a makeover.

They know what my name is when it's time to send me the bill, though.

People can call me whatever they want. It really doesn't bother me at all.

Maybe a Hispanic th ing? I have 2 coworkers who call me "mama" and they are both hispanic. Doesn't really bother me though, but I had never heard it before

My friends and I call each other mama or lady in joking affection. Almost none of us are white though two of us are mixed race/AA. My SIL calls me mama and she grew up in S. Korea.

The receptionist and nurses aren't sending you the bill.

Mama doesn't bother me, tho I don't use it myself. My Latin American friends use it most often. And the Asian checker at my Safeway.

Lady does make me cringe a bit.

I don't like it. I also don't like that half the group's I wanted to join when DS was a baby had mama in the name. "Crunchy Mamas" "baby wearing Mamas" etc. I think the "mama" mom has a negative stereotype surrounding her (crazy pro breastfeeder, no sugar or preserved food ever, etc) which is part of my hesitation with the name.

I don't know. Possibly? He's black.

I do not call my friends mama. I do use lady a lot. But all my friends do. I wouldn't say it to someone I don't know pretty well.

It's a term of endearment so I don't really get the big deal.

+1 I can't stand all the different mamas. I much prefer the term as a use of endearment. I was always called mama by a Puerto Rican family friend.
