DCUM really opened my eyes. I have been living under a rock.

Where's the rock? (I'll admit, it's starting to sound like prime RE!) Or where's OP's "admission" that her DC got into Sidwell?

Agreed.
I also had no real clue how anxiety inducing this process was for many parents - there are so many wonderful schools in this area. But I also had no idea until after applications closed that the odds of getting in appeared to be so low (ratio of open spots to applicants) and we saw how stressed some parents were about the process at playdates etc. Anyhow my daughter starts a great school in a few weeks. She did get a number of offers and we were able to make a choice - I wonder if the fact that we were completely oblivious actually helped?

Okay, I thought this was the OP again. And so that's why I thought it was admitting her Quaker school was Sidwell.

Anyway, OP, consider yourself lucky you didn't know. Great if you landed in a top school like Sidwell. The process shouldn't be stressful, but it is. Especially if you read DCUM.

Oh, I read the "also" in the second sentence as indicating that a third (at least) poster was chiming in that her experience was similar to the OP's and the immediately PP's.

At any rate, that's the nature of the beast. If you don't obsess (and/or aren't in contact with a lot of other people going through the same process and obsessing) and your DC gets into a school you really like, then the admissions process seems relatively easy and painless, at least at the PreK/K level.

I do think that if you show up at the parent interview all flinty-eyed and aggressive, or if you are very insecure and apologetic about your DC's chances, or if you offer them large donations (in an obvious way at least ) that this puts off admissions officers.

Plenty of folks on DCUM boast anonymously, for whatever reasons that we can't fathom, yet they do it. So I do think OP is pulling our legs.
