Yeah, you might actually have to treat your cousin like a human being instead of a paid incubator. Surrogacy should be illegal, as it is in almost every other civilized country.

Wow. What a mean thing to say on an infertility support board. Some people aren't able to carry a child (i.e. gay couples) so they should not be able to have children?

No, it's not mean. It's a human rights issue. Infertility doesn't give you the right to treat another human like livestock.

Who is being treated like livestock? Take your fake news agenda elsewhere.

I don’t know where I stand on this issue. I come from a country where GC is illegal. If you there no about it, it is a bit like selling your organs. You don’t donate your uterus, you sell it. The idea behind this is that it can put poorer women in the position of selling their body parts (uterus or kidney) for money. Again, I am not necessarily against it because I know in this country women are respected and treated well and maternal medicine is decent (not great)... still... I am not there yet, but it’s a very ethically complicated issue.

+ 1

Plus it doesn't just affect a woman's uterus. Pregnancy and childbirth can also have serious repercussions for a woman's body for the rest of her life. I suffered severe complications during my pregnancy that threatened my major organs. I needed blood transfusions, and I've also had some lasting kidney damage. I almost died, and my first child would have been without a mother. I can't imagine asking another woman to put herself through this as part of an economic exchange.

A woman's uterus is not a commodity to buy, sell, or rent.

Again, in this country no one is being forced into that decision. Are you also a pro-lifer since you seem to think you know what's best for women?

Right, nobody would be forced to sell a kidney for money either, but if it became legal, I am sure many people would do that too... it’s just a very complicated matter. The problem in my opinion is that there is a cash transaction. A better law would be that GCs don’t get paid for carrying the baby, but they get reimbursed for expenses, but carry the baby out of the goodness of their heart. In that way, they would not sell their boat parts for the money, but out of the desire to help someone else... just like it is when someone donates a kidney

Anonymous wrote:I know this thread is a little old. But I want to chime in with some thoughts (and questions)...
After 4 years of IVF, 10 cycles and 4 miscarriages (the last one just this week), I am at the end of my rope. We have already started using DE (two cycles ago, both BFP but stopped growing at around 9 weeks, heartbreaking). Genetic results normal for the first DE (twin) loss, still waiting for results on this last one. Regardless it would seem my uterus just can not sustain a pregnancy. We still have two frozen.
Hubby and I are considering going with a GC - so it would be with DE, and a GC. I am curious to hear if anyone else is/was in the same boat and what has your experience been? (I can’t help but wonder if I will love the child less because there is no genetic tie and I did not birth the baby?)
Also curious about the cost - taking the IVF cost (for embryo creation) out of the equation, how much would the rest of the cost be?

I am sorry for your losses. Have you looked into immune issues since you are able to get pregnant? The cost of a gestational carrier will vary but is usually about $75,000-100,000 in this area, exclusive of your IVF costs.

Thank for the reply - yes I did the complete recurrent loss panel earlier on so immune issues have been ruled out. Grateful for your reply to my question.

Your answer is astonishingly ignorant. Just because it's legal here doesn't mean women aren't being forced or coerced. You also don't see UMC white women lining up to be paid gestational carriers; pregnancy and childbirth are outsourced to the economically disadvantaged. Similarly, prostitution is legal in some countries, but women aren't opting in from a position of empowerment, they're typically trafficked from economically disadvantaged areas, or feel that they have no other options. If you do any research at all on "gestational carriers" in many countries, including some here in the US, you'll find a very shady industry that takes advantage of women, strips them of their bodily autonomy, and sometimes doesn't even adequately cover their medical expenses while pregnant. It is the commodifying of women's sex organs and biological functions.

You are the last person to be calling others ignorant. Where are you getting your fearmongering talking points from?
