Whoops. Meant Vienna. Sorry. |
It's less congested. I think the residential neighborhoods are prettier. It's easier to get to Metro than it was from our Vienna neighborhood. People and schools seem less sports-obsessed and more interested in a wider variety of topics. Langley HS people are less snooty vis-a-vis McLean HS than Madison HS people were vis-a-vis Marshall HS. There's no divide comparable to that between Town of Vienna residents and county residents with Vienna addresses. I do miss the greater retail variety in Vienna and the W&OD trail On the other thing, some other things in Vienna have McLean equivalents (Viva Vienna = McLean Day; VYI = MYB; Vienna Woods/Cardinal Hill = Tuckahoe/Chesterbook, etc.). |
I'm confused by this - we lived in town for 8 years and moved 2 years ago into the county outside town limits. No one has said boo to us about not being "in town" any more. I'd say that our kid's social circle is probably 50/50 on who live in the town limits, and we've not noticed any "divide". For a lot of people that want a house larger than a 1950s rambler but can't afford a $1M+ McMansion, most of the $650-$900K houses in that range are just outside the town limits. |
Interesting. I didn't like McLean at all. I am not from around here and found the people to be challenging. Vienna has a much more welcoming feel. |
Different strokes. I liked Vienna, but find the people in McLean more interesting. |

I moved to Vienna last year from another part of Fairfax Cnty.
We like the area near Nottoway park -- just outside the Town of Vienna tax zone, but close to the park and metro and High Schools. There are some new 1.4mil houses right across from the park on Courthouse. We walk in the park regularly and have meant to go to the Thursday night music performances in the summer. There are always sports teams playing there -- soccer, baseball, football, volleyball, tennis (for adults and kids). People always out walking their dogs. Pick up basketball games. It doesn't have a great playground, but those new houses are right next to the VFW lodge and they have a nice playground. Those houses do not have big lots, but I think they all back to trees. Might be something to consider if there are any still left. This area is zoned for Thoreau MS and Madison HS. The elem. is Marshall Rd, but the AAP center (G/T) is Mosby Woods (9 on Great Schools). Here is the address of one unit. 2692 Salem Oak Ln Vienna, VA 22181 The development is called Vienna Grove : http://www.christophercompanies.com/communities/vienna-grove/ This area is very close to the high school without being right on top of it. I think the only people who care about being in town or out of town are those who pay the extra taxes for being in the town of Vienna. |
AHH! Wish I had known this. Got a ticket there several years ago for not stopping fully at a stop sign (the kind of stop where you slow to 3mph but do not stop). My baby was screaming in the back and I had to go breastfeed in the backseat while the cop wrote the ticket. He could not look me in the eye when he came to hand it to me. Not my finest hour. |
I live in one of the townhouses that backs to Nottoway. Obviously OP's budget is greater but we love the park and that community. Zoned for Mosby Woods. 22181 is very walkable for people who just like to walk but don't need to walk to a coffee shop. Pre-baby we did walk to downtown Vienna every weekend though, and we would see several other couples also making that regular walk. Long, but pleasant. |
+1 Challenging is one way to put it - great word choice. |
Vienna is the redneck discount version of McLean |
That's a LONG walk! |
Chipotle, Starbucks, tropical smoothie, nottoway park, Oakton library. All sidewalks. |
We live near Oakton high school. |
Ha! McLean used to be so unwalkable, but it's coming along.

^^Example of the lovely folks of McLean. |
