What's the point of TJ 2017 elite school acceptance stats mirror nationawide acceptance rates

Here is the more complete list that was posted on the other board. Looks plenty impressive to me in what many TJ students considered a weaker class than the previous class of 2016.

Interesting data on Georgia Tech. Great STEM school...popular amongst TJ grads to apply (111). Even though 35 were accepted, only 1 chose to attend? Is that a misprint or is that just odd?

It's not a misprint. But it is unusual. It was an off year for GA Tech attendance. TJ usually has more kids choose to go. 6 each in the 2 prior years. I think this year was just an anomaly.

Also, too add to the list:

U Illinois UC (6 in Engineering): 68/48/11
Purdue (9 in Engineering) 71/46/7
RPI: 43/27/3
Harvey Mudd 11/4/2
U of Chicago: 67/12/6

No misprint. Only one student is going to Georgia Tech. Last year 42 were accepted and 6 enrolled. I suspect those that were accepted got better offers or decided to stay in state at Va Tech or UVA.

78/450 to my own OOS top schools list, so one in every six kids. plus 150 to UVA/WM/VT. impressive.

That was quite an oversight by the OP not to mention that 12 got into U.Chicago, what's that about 18-19% or so?

The stupid students from dcps go to college but they will drop out because they are not prepared

Even Niche with its flawed methodology rates it No. 8 in the country. I'd say that elite.

OP kinda cherry picked the data. And failed to account for top 10 Engineering admits.

Those are not impressive stats at all. Those percentages are the typical acceptance rates for these schools period. TJ is not adding any benefit to college admissions. As the "best" high school in NOVA I'm really surprised about this. So what's the point of TJ again?

Have you ever heard of selection bias? TJ has a huge number of kids applying to "elite" schools, much more than average, good high schools. That that many kids are in a position to credibly apply to these schools is impressive. That TJ acceptance rate is no higher than the best kids for other high schools means little.

Those kids would have been in a position to credibly apply to those schools if they had stayed in their base schools. TJ only accepts these types of students, it doesn't turn them into these types.

Actually, this list does not seem impressive to me when you consider that to just get admitted to TJ, one has to be a potentially ivy caliber middle schooler. Less than half of TJ applicants get into UVA. I'm sure that in 8th grade these kids were regarded as easily being the types of students to get into UVA. Honestly if I had a straight A middle schooler who tests well and is involved in extracurricular activities, I would assume that he would go to the likes of UVA. I would see it as disheartening that less than half of these types of kids get admitted after attending TJ.

Correcting the PP. Not sure where he/she got that less than half get into UVA with the numbers clearly listed above. This year 56% got accepted to UVA which is historically low for TJ. Usually about 64% get accepted over the last 5 years. if you are in the top 50% at TJ (though TJ doesn't formally rank but the kids and schools know where they stand by their weighted GPAs), you have about an 80% chance of getting in. UVA was a near safety school for my S and a his close friends who all got in. Most of them including my S chose not to attend UVA in the end and enrolled at some of the other schools listed above.

Also, more TJ kids would have likely gotten in off the waitlist but they withdrew their names off the waitlist when they got into programs better suited to them. Those kids who decide not to accept a position on the waitlist are essentially counted as rejections in the stats. So the number of accepts would likely be a few percentage points higher than 56% if all those TJ seniors stayed on the waitlist.

Ok, but a 64% acceptance rate is still not impressive considering that in 8th grade this group consisted of the highest achievers in their schools. It shows that something about TJ attendance, whether it be not ending up in the top half due to stiff competition, harder to stand out in extracurriculars among peers, UVA wanting to limit the # of admittances from the same school, or perhaps something else, seems to be causing kids who in 8th grade would probably be considered shoo- ins for UVA to not get admitted.
