Agree, we have success with figs, persimmon, paw paws, serviceberry, elderberry; my neighbor has grapes and pears. We are in the District.

Join a local garden club! That's what I did and am really glad of it. Get on their list serv if they have one, go to the meetings - they bring in experts on specific topics, one month might be pruning trees, the next month might be gardening for flower cuttings.

Lots of free advice from local gardeners who have been gardening in the area for decades and know what works - referrals for contractors, free plants if they do a plant swap, garden tours, volunteer opportunities etc etc. surprised no one has mentioned this yet!
