Why do you go to your church?

For anyone looking for a progressive church that's good with social justice issues, Dumbarton United Methodist is terrific. It has a long history of social activism, starting in the civil rights movement in the 60s, and was the first church in the District to conduct a same sex wedding. They remain very active on LGBT issues, and are also part of the sanctuary movement, standing with immigrants and refugees facing deportation.

They also have an amazing sense of community and good children/youth programming. An unusually high percentage of their members are clergy, either retired or working in a non-pastoral role (eg as seminary professors, hospital chaplains, NGO leaders, etc.) The church is located in Georgetown, but almost all the members pass by many other churches to get to Dumbarton. Some drive quite a distance from DC, MD, VA. It's a really unique and wonderful place.

I feel an overwhelming sense of peace come over me when I walk inside. Something about the building and the music and the calm bits of silence between parts of mass. It's a much needed chance for reflection and tranquility after busy weeks.
