Starting in 3rd grade the teacher doesn't read anything and each section is timed.

If you're a teacher, then don't you know there is no CogAT for first grade?

Wow, aren't you rude. Do you know that not everyone lives in Northern Virginia? Yes, there most certainly is a CogAT for 1st grade (And it's available for all grades K-12). Just because FCPS doesn't administer it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

Sure, but what non fcps teacher would be on the aap forum? The post wasn't rude at all...

Wow. If you're children are like you, there's no AAP in their future.[/quote]

Lol! Well said. These posters are all bent out of shape that some kid's test wasn't timed, and then throw around unverified BS that 99% of other kids' tests were timed in FCPS. So typical from these FCPS know it all parents.

You are right when you talk about the apple not falling far from their DNA tree . . . they can't imagine a 7 year old with the ability to note time and test instructions and then keep that in short term memory until the bus arrives home. What a bunch of hypocrites . . . they are probably the sort of Tiger Moms that prep their kids for the CogAT . . . Thank you for answering the original question of whether the NNAT can be administered in 1st Grade without enforcing the strict time limits. Just ignore these people who obviously know nothing but post anyway. They admitted anyway that their kid didn't even take the NNAT this go-round . . .

It is always mature and kind to insult people, isn't it? Shameful comments which I assume you would not allow your child to make.

What's worse are thin-skinned people like you and the Tiger Mom (with both kids in AAP . . . wow!) trying to moderate these forums and add unrelated assertions about fairness. None of you know anything about what happened in 1G this year re: the strictness of any time limits, so please STFU. Plenty of your friends think the same thing at your PTA meetings, however they just won't say it . . .

Ugly comments. Unhelpful, unnecessary and meanspirited.

Aren't you the pot calling the kettle black? If you can't handle DCUM, then please refrain and walk/run yourself, along with your insinuations. You were clearly wrong and don't know what you were talking about. But yes, do give yourself a pat on the back for etiquette . . .

P.S. Who cares about whether you know anything as long as you are PC, right?! My DC had no time limits so please accept that simple fact and move on. It's not that big of a deal . . . but you wanted to get into something different, like every Tiger Mom in Arlington or Fairfax. Quit moving the goalposts. It's not about fairness.

Not OP, but I did not know that. Is that listed anywhere? So only NNAT is timed?

Sorry that the Tiger Mom know-it-alls are making judgements without information on this year's testing. I would continue to ask around. We had no evidence of hard time limits on NNAT, FWIW.

My DC's NNAT was probably not strictly timed. Done on a computer and DC had time to go back and double-check all answers, apparently fixing one. All the kids were able to finish. Of course, perhaps all the students were quick and finished in less than 30, such that the time limit was non issue, but DC said there was never an announced cutoff. Scored perfect 99 percentile. I expected a high score based on practice tests, but just reporting on the time limit experience I saw people arguing about on this thread.

Anonymous wrote:NNAT is 30 minutes, but teacher let everyone finish, even the slowest. I advised my DC of this possibility before hand, so DC used the extra time to go back and double-check every answer.

For my DD's school(at least for her classroom), the kids need to finish within 30mins, no extra time.

Does anyone know how the 2nd grade COGAT is administered next month? If untimed and these are picture problems, how does the teacher "read" each question? Aren't they all the same in that part of the test, what is there to read? Also, computer or paper this year? TIA!
Anonymous
CoGat has verbal/vocabulary questions (like analogies and what a word means), math questions, and picture questions. The teacher reads each question and they take it as a class. There is not much to read in the questions but they all have basic directions and of course the verbal/vocabulary section has words and/or sentences. In previous years it has been paper and taken over a few days, but our school has not had their AAP fall meeting this year so I am not sure of any changes for this year.

How many questions are their in the COGAT that is given over 3 days in FCPS????

There are 3 sections, so I assume one per day. Also the kids are 7-8 so I assume it's around 1-2 hours of testing a day.

I don't think it's that long, but I haven't given it so I am not sure.
