Saoirse - Which pronunciation (or mispronunciation) will we run into most frequently?

Don't do it. Just don't.

I know a few kids of different ages with this name and I think it is becoming more popular, so more people will know it and get used to it. I remember when people had trouble pronouncing Sean and that's pretty common today.

If you love the name and felel it is the right one for your child, use it!

Saoirse Ronan was on a few talk shows last year promoting Brooklyn and she usually did a bit about how to pronounce it so more people may be familiar with it now. On the other hand I'm from Ireland and I wouldn't use it here or at least not with the original spelling. My dream name for a child was always Caoimhe (pronouned Kwee Va) but had to drop that idea once we decided to stay here!

Agreed with the above posts. I can pronounce it because I'm familiar with it (Irish husband) but don't expect anyone will EVER guess the pronunciation or spelling if they don't already know it. I love the names Niamh and Caoimhe too (Neev and Keeva) but wouldn't use them either since we live here and not Ireland.

I've heard Seer-shuh or Sur-shuh.

She's beautiful and doesn't seem to mind her name. Come on people - it's not that hard to learn something new like how to pronounce a name.

I am surprised by all the people who have never heard this before. I am not particularly Irish and I hadn't heard of the actress before, but I'm familiar with the name and know how it's pronounced. If you are Irish and it has some meaning for you, go for it, and people will get used to it. I think it must be becoming more popular already. If you aren't irish, I would give you serious side eye for using such an ethnic name. But I think it's beatiful and hope you go for it!

I see "Sarcy" like Darcy.

How awful.

It's not hard for adults to learn something new like how to pronounce a name. Kids are mean though, and they will be incredibly mean when it comes to this name. I understand names having special meanings for parents and such, but this is just cruel to a child.

If you must, make it a middle name.

When Saoirse Ronan, then mostly unknown young teen actress, was nominated for an Oscar for Atonement several years ago, I remember reading an article which discussed the various acting nominees & listed things that could either help or hurt each of their chances of winning. The list of things working against Saoirse Ronan simply read "Nobody knows how to pronounce her name!"

I know the correct pronounciation, but in my head it's still "Say-or-zay".

Kids these days are used to different names, though. I wouldn't disqualify it. Most people will be able to get Seer-sha after a correction or two.
