Jamie Lynne Spears' daughter in serious ATV accident

I was on ATV's back in the day at that age, but I was always responsible and didn't do crazy shit on them. My daughter is the same way, but still way younger, so we'll see when she gets to that age. I guess now the mental note is not to do it near bodies of water...

I know someone who broke his neck on an ATM, nowhere near water. Water is far from the only danger to ATM drivers.

In fact, the linked article states that the child drove into the water because she was trying to avoid a drainage ditch. She just as easily could have overturned into that drainage ditch. Pick your poison.

It's very common in rural areas to let your kids ride ATVs, dirt bikes, and snowmobiles. I grew up in such an area, though my parents were never into it. It's a culture and way of life; my good friend nearly died on an ATV, and the accident took away her chances for her dream career. She doesn't remember the accident or several weeks surrounding it. Still, once she was recovered, she got right back on an ATV, like it was a horse she had to teach not to throw her or something.

Even though it's "part of the culture" - it just seems so unsafe.

I grew up in south central VA, and this past Christmas I saw SO MANY posts from parents who have little kids who bought them four wheelers and "mini" ATV for Xmas, and I kept thinking who does this? This is so dangerous!

Because it is. I did not grow up I an area where it's common to use them, yet I know two people who were killed riding them. I have another friend who ended up in a ditch on top of a hornets nest. No permanent damage, thankfully, but she's never ridden one again. They're incredibly dangerous because they are difficult to control and steer.

Doesn't anyone remember 10+ years ago when Britney was caught on camera driving along some country road with Sean Preston in her lap of the car? She said that is normal to do that because they are country. Same with little Maddie driving the ATV. I really hope that little girl is okay.

My brother got a three-wheel one when he was 13 & one of his friends ran it into a tree the first week.

I will never earn six figures. I will never travel out of this country. But damn, I'm so much smarter than they are.

Leroi from Dave Matthews Band died on one too.

just because it is "part of culture" does not mean it is OK

Riding atvs is very "country." I rode around with my friend at that age and we were reckless. She was very country from West Virginia.

This is like the article in the Post recently where the family of a little girl killed by her 3 YO brother blame the boy and not the grandfather who left the gun unsecured. Can't blame the grandfather because, culture. This is the "country" where people do this.

I don't know which would be worse. A child dying or living what remains of their life with brain damage on a ventilator.

This. I can NOT imagine what it feels like to see your child underwater and not be able to free them. No matter what the outcome they are both scared for life.
