DCPS 17-18 Draft Calendar Released

I sent in comments on the Fridays issue. The Fridays are all in the fall too. In winter, would make skiing easier on these non-weekends. Instead of all these random days off, make 4 or 5 day weekends sometimes as either people could go out of town in low demand times (e.g. Thursday to Monday instead of Friday to Sunday peak) or groups such as YMCA would have enough days in a row to have mini-camp.

What I do mind is two things.

One. Again five out of six Fridays off from Oct 27 through Dec 1. That killed me this year - too many four day weeks. Start a darn week later.

Two. Five day long Memorial Day weekend????

Now there's a summer vacation opportunity. OBX would be perfect...and cheap!

So you're blowing off parent teacher conferences?

Blowing off the 5 minutes where the teacher, for the 4th time that year, says "He's doing fine" ? Yes. With no reservations.

When they put it with a long weekend yes! Plus, I view PT conferences like performance reviews - there should be nothing said in them that is a surprise - you should be getting all the information all along. Plus, that's always the one that gets cancelled for snow days anyway. How often do we get that one????

I'm sure DCPS is quite concerned about your ski weekends. Sheesh.

What happened to the commitment that spring break was always around Emancipation Day?

I have it somewhere - but I think it was 2015 they announced that ....from now on spring break will be aligned with Emancipation Day and not Easter....

Note: The reason given was that now we get a full week to celebrate Emancipation Day!

No holiday on Easter Monday. I never got why that was important but I bet a bunch of people will complain about that.

This calendar is going to change. Don't book any trips yet.

WTF is up with the Fridays? Do they not believe in going to school on Fridays in the Fall? Didn't they get criticism about it this year. It was awful. Even my kid asked me why they never go to school on Fridays anymore (and specifically said she missed her special). Geesh. I am going to comment and make sure that the school community knows to comment too!

DCPS should be concerned about taxpayers' preferences, including, if not mostly, the wealthier ones.

My kids won't be back at school on the 21st. They will be back one week later. They will start on the 28th, like their cousins who live in MoCo, Minneapolis and Dallas. I know that's bad example, disrupts the class etc. But I do not care, if DCPS decides that mid-summer is a good time to go back to school.

What? Why? You can't plan to be back for the first day of school?

Florida typically starts around this time - why not use that as your base?

Might want to check in with your family -- since MoCo goes back Sept 5 in 2017. Are you really going to have them miss 2 weeks of school?

Yours is a selfish decision.

Yes I know that MoCo starts 2 weeks later. They will not be late two weeks, just two weeks. Aug. 21 is still the middle of the summer.
