What city is best for 120k salary?

You realize Georgia is a state and there isn't one public school system, right? There are some great school districts in the Atlanta suburbs and your money will go a lot further. You'll be able to afford a decent house. I personally wouldn't want to live in the burbs but sounds like your only other option is Bethesda which is the same.

Median HHI in San Jose is 102k, per http://www.deptofnumbers.com/income/california/san-jose/, but median home price is 1M, so I wouldn't recommend it, although it's clearly possible.

Bethesda and Atlanta are not the same. Why do people always throw this out there?

Because they think they're better if the live in DC proper.
